You have heard it over and over, “New Year, new you.” But for many of us, the gym is a frightening experience, anxiety-inducing and full of the unknown. In fact for some of us, exercise has never been a part of our lives and the thought of even starting a routine is daunting. Here is the undeniable truth for everyone: exercise is not optional; it is mandatory if you want a better quality of life.
KentuckyOne Health has created Lifestyle Centers that are a perfect solution for people looking to get healthy, but who aren’t sure how to do it. It’s a combination of a medically monitored gym, spa and an education center all in one. They seek to be a preventative answer for members who want to improve their quality of life. KentuckyOne Health also desires to repair and improve the health of people who are already compromised. Instead of just being a hospital, or being an immediate care center, they differentiate themselves with these centers because of the ongoing follow-up with their members and patients. Here’s what you need to know:
WHAT DO THEY OFFER?
Members are here for three main reasons:
Cardiac and pulmonary rehab
As part of a postop regimen or as a doctor-ordered exercise prescription, this rehab is a lifesaver. The group workouts, which are very strict and highly monitored, can help lessen the physical and emotional effects of their respective diseases, while improving stamina and strength to get patients back to their normal activities.
Lifestyle medicine is aimed at the person who is less familiar with exercise and wellness. It’s used as a preventative tool and includes:
- Individualized exercise and instruction
- One-on-one nutrition counseling
- Healthy behavior classes
- Stress management skills classes
- Relaxation and meditation instruction
- Emotional and behavioral health coaching
- Cooking classes
- Tobacco cessation
Integrative medicine is used in conjunction with either the rehabs or the Lifestyle Medicine to complement the experience. This is the spa-like component of the center, which uses holistic healing methods, including:
- Chronic muscle pain evaluation
- Mindful meditation
- Integrative medicine consultation
- Spiritual counseling
- T’ai chi
- Therapeutic massage
- Therapeutic yoga
WHO IS THE TYPICAL MEMBER?
There are two types of members at these centers: the ones who go as part of their physician-ordered plan and the ones who simply want to get healthy.
For those partaking in a doctor-ordered exercise prescription, they will most likely participate in the cardiac or pulmonary rehab. Others have health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, or perhaps they have never exercised and need the constant monitoring and assistance by health professionals who are available at these centers.
The other members, the ones who are just looking to get healthy, are usually people who have limited education on healthy living habits and are not currently exercising.
A typical member is 50 to 60 years old and is looking to modify their lifestyle. Most have risk factors for obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. They want to be medically supervised and have protection in case of an incident. All members, regardless of why they’re at the Lifestyle Centers, seek to improve their quality of life.
While you may not be an ideal candidate for membership, you likely know someone who is: An aging parent, a friend who needs a restart, a friend who has never exercised or a friend who smokes. And this is the perfect place for them!
IS IT COVERED BY INSURANCE? DO YOU NEED A DOCTOR’S ORDERS TO BE A MEMBER?
If you are in either of the rehab groups (cardiac or pulmonary), then most insurances will cover it. For the person just looking to join as a Lifestyle Medicine member, the fees are $75 a month, which is less than a trainer and comparable to a gym membership.
The Lifestyle Medicine membership regime does require a doctor’s referral. However, only 25 percent of the members are sent by the doctor. The majority of them initiate the process and get the doctor’s referral second.
WHAT MAKES LIFESTYLE CENTERS DIFFERENT FROM TYPICAL GYMS?
Lifestyle Center is all-encompassing. It is a healthy, holistic community for its members that addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of health and wellness. It is totally customized for each member depending on his or her limitations and needs, while integrating all parts of the member’s life, from eating and exercise to emotional skills. There is no magic pill here; it’s an intentional way of life.
By making it medically monitored, membership offers a sense of security by giving members a soft place to land and offering a smooth transition into their new mindset of healthy, mindful living.
