Like all fashion, denim trends cycle. This year, you’re likely seeing a resurgence of the ’60s flare and the bootcut — two unexpected yet welcomed options. Today, we’re focusing on five jean styles and highlighting one splurge-worthy and one under-$100 pair for each. Here are the jeans we think you’ll love this season.
LIGHT WASH FLARES
Flares, an iconic cut of the past, made their way back last year, and they continue to gain popularity. There are some key differences this year, though. The fit is slightly looser through the leg, the wash is lighter, and the flare hits right between a bootcut and a bell bottom — wide enough to be noticed (and to elongate the leg) yet tailored enough to not look like a 1960s costume piece.
Both of the flares pictured come in longer lengths and higher waists to flatter the body. The splurge-worthy jeans ($175) feature a barely distressed accent while the under-$100 pair (on sale for $68.60; reg. $98) is about as high-waisted as jeans come in an oh-so-trendy shade of blue. Keep in mind both of these (and most flares) are longer, and they look best with heels or heeled boots.
Perhaps the most surprising comeback of 2020 is the bootcut jean. This cut acts as the elegant, sophisticated counterpart to the fun and youthful flare. As it elongates and balances out the leg, it also flatters all body types. Pair these with a blouse, t-shirt or sweater, and any pair of heels (or heeled boots) to achieve that statuesque “legs for days” look.
A medium wash bootcut like the option pictured on the left below ($238) is great if you’re not too sure about the washed out, pale denim, and the darker wash on the right ($78) can make any outfit look polished and chic.

Cropped cuts and raw hems continue to be a top denim trend this year. They’re especially great for year-long wear as they keep you cool enough through transition weather, pair well with boots for winter and can easily move into spring and summer. Opt for a looser fit this year or a pair that flares a bit at the hem for added on-trend style.
This darker wash cropped jean on the left (on sale for $219.30; reg. $258) is perfect for everyday wear. You can easily dress it down with sneakers and a sweater, or up with a blouse and heels. These light wash Levi’s on the right ($98) are a 2020 favorite. They’re high-waisted and hit the color, hem and straight-leg trends.
Straight-leg jeans are this year’s version of the ever-popular classic skinny jean. Not only are straight-leg cuts far more comfortable, but they also flatter a range of body types. Following along the same path as the other jeans mentioned, lighter washes are the trendy pick, but a dark wash straight-leg jean is your 2020 closet staple. Consider cuffing these jeans or finding a slightly cropped option if you prefer the shorter style.
We love the light wash straight-leg jean pictured on the left ($148) for its casual feel, looser fit and ability to cuff stylishly. The dark wash straight leg on the right (some sizes on sale for $45; reg. $75) fits more snug and is cropped a bit higher for the ideal mix of classic and trendy.
Although the skinny jean may be less on-trend this year, there is always room for this classic cut. Ideal for pairing with tall boots, booties or your favorite pumps, the skinny jean is a timeless piece. Wear these with an oversized sweater to balance out the look, or pair them with a blouse and cropped blazer for a slightly dressed down yet office-appropriate ensemble.
We prefer a dark wash skinny jean like the option pictured on the left ($179), for it’s chic and tailored finish, but a medium wash ($68) and slightly cropped length like the one on the right softens the skinny jean and brings it into 2020.
