Hooray! Springtime is FINALLY here and we are ready to shed those sweaters, leggings and boots and show some skin. And spring in Louisville is filled with so many events – weddings, festivals, graduations and the biggest of them all, the Kentucky Derby! Here are some of favorite products, places and tips for how to get head-to-toe ready for fun in the sun.
1. It’s all in the details.
Refresh your look for spring and get those hands and feet in their best shape with a manicure and pedicure. Winter feet definitely need some attention before breaking out those strappy sandals, right? J Michael’s Spa and Salon offers a variety of nail services, in addition to their hair styling, which range from $25 for a natural nail manicure to $55 for a shellac manicure, and $55 for a basic pedicure to $70 for a shellac pedicure. If you’re anything like us, you tend mess up your freshly manicured hands opening your car door. Luckily, polish retouches are available for $15 to $18.
2. Prep and protect your hair.
Warmer weather means more time outside, and whether we’re out for a walk in the park or on a beach vacation, we want to protect our hair from damaging UV rays that come from that sunshine we love. The haircare experts at Omagi Salon and Spa recommend the Aveda Sun Care line to protect against sun, salt and chlorine damage. The Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser ($21) is a color-safe formula that removes chlorine, salt and product residue while also helping to maintain moisture balance. The Sun Care After-Sun Hair Mask ($27) is an intensive cream masque that moisturizes and restores the look of sun-exposed hair. Round out the three-part defense and recovery system with the Sun Care Protective Hair Veil ($28), which is a lightweight, water-resistant UV defense mist that forms an invisible screen to help protect hair from sun exposure to minimize damage and dryness. Just need a little hair recovery from all that winter dryness? We suggest Aveda’s Dry Remedy line, also available at Omagi.
3. Uncover spring-ready skin.
We had a quick chat with local dermatologist Dr. Clint Tucker from Advanced Dermatology and Dermaesthetics for a few tips for transforming flaky skin back to its original glowing state. Here’s what he shared with us:
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. Cold weather, winds and indoor heating can make skin dry, itchy and flaky. Ugh! We’re fans of salt and sugar scrubs in a moisturizing base, like this deliciously scented Coffee and Grapefruit Sugar Scrub by Louisville-based natural skin care line, Belle and Rose.
Drink your water. Really. We all know this, but it’s easy to forget during the course of a coffee-fueled day. Drink six to eight glasses of water every day to keep your skin at optimal hydration. Maybe it’s easier to remember with a fun water bottle? Water and Oak Outdoor Co. has lots to choose from.
Get a faux glow. Pick your favorite self-tanner (after exfoliating, for best results) that will give you an even, natural looking color (or indulge in a spray tan for the best professional results). And, of course, slather on that sunscreen once you get your skin sunshine-ready to keep it healthy and glowing for years to come.
Clique Waxing Boutique and Pure Tan are merging into one building, making it more convenient to take care of all your grooming needs for the spring and summer months ahead. Facial waxing and threading services start at just $10 and vary depending on the desired area, with eyebrows ranging from $20-$30. Full body waxing services are also available, with the popular bikini waxes starting at $35. Once the hair is removed, don’t forget to make an appointment for a spray tan to start your vacation off with a nice glow. First-time tans are $29, and each tan after that is $45. Packages are available starting at $108 for a set of three tans, and a monthly unlimited package is $150. Partial tans are available upon request.
When are we at our most beautiful? When we’re relaxed, of course! The benefits of massage are endless, and we can think of no better way to shake off the winter blahs. Get your dose of ahhhh at Elements Massage and Elements Massage–Middletown. Massages start at $69.
5. Get moving.
Whether you’re getting in shape for a vacation or taking advantage of less crowded classes while the rest of the city heads to the beach, Barre 3 is the perfect way to get in shape. There are a variety of packages available, but we’re most excited about their New Client Special. As a new client, you can take advantage of unlimited classes for a month for $99 or three classes for $40. Arguably the best part of moms taking classes at Barre 3 is the childcare offered for children 6 weeks and up. The cost is $5 per child per class during the classes marked online. Learn more at barre3.com.
NOW we’re ready for spring! Get out and enjoy the sunshine, beautifully.
