It’s finally August, the finale of summer. That means it’s time to start thinking about going back to school, football season, fall and winter wardrobes and more! From beauty finds to fashion to things for your home, we’ve got you covered. This month’s SB FINDS will give you a little bit of everything you need for this month. Enjoy!
Dress it up or down
August is the perfect time to start transitioning your wardrobe. Might we start with adding in some fall colors? This mustard yellow Helmut Lang top, $355 at Peacock Boutique, is the perfect shade of yellow for the end of summer. It’s not too dark, yet not too bright, but oh-so-very-fashionable. Pair it with these Rag and Bone jeans, $285, to dress it down, or opt for a skirt to make it more formal.
We think it’s safe to say that in the South, football has been on everyone’s minds since the New England Patriots took home the Super Bowl trophy back in February. Well, fear not, friends, the countdown to college football kickoff is winding down, so why not wear your football fandom? This “football on my mind” shirt, $38, pairs perfectly with a denim jacket, $94, for those chilly fall night games. And add a pop of color — preferably your team’s color — in the clutch, $34. All these items can be found in NuLu’s newest resident, Six Sisters Boutique.
Jumpsuits are so in this season and we found the perfect one. This Black Halo jumpsuit combines the perfect amount of sass and professionalism, allowing you to show off your personality while getting business done. The “V” neckline is perfect for accentuating statement jewelry pieces, and the high waistline is flattering on any figure. Find it for $378 at Liv Boutique.
Fall is on its way, and Apricot Lane has a little bit of everything you need to transition fashionably into the new season. We particularly love this sleeveless sweater dress for its comfortable material and sleek side slit. Layer with your favorite fall jacket to keep your shoulders from getting cold during brisk evenings on the town. Pair it with a statement necklace to complete the look. Find the sweater, $69, and the statement necklace, $30, at Apricot Lane.
It’s back-to-school season, and that means shoe shopping. Let’s be honest, “back to school” is just to excuse we use to validate our shoe shopping addiction. These Saucony Jazz Low Pro shoes are the perfect pair to add to your wardrobe. The Jazz Low Pro is a sleeker version to the original Jazz shoe and comes with two different colored laces, which makes it perfect for mix-and-match styling. Other highlights of the shoe include shock-absorbing soles and slim-fitting nylon. Find a pair for $60 at Water + Oak Outdoor Company.
Canvas & leather totes
For those going back to school, or if you’re looking for a new bag to tote your work computer in, these soft, upcycled, fully lined canvas bags with leather handles are zippered for extra security and feature small, convenient pockets on both the inside and outside. You can find them at both Vintage Style & Designs locations for $55 each.
Rose gold & rose quartz bracelet
What girl doesn’t like a gorgeous stone and a little sparkle? This 14-karat rose gold and rose quartz open-cuff bracelet delivers just that. The soft pink is perfect for any season. Find it at Clater Jewelers for $83.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Aromatherapy is a popular choice when it comes to improving your mood and overall health. Take this concept to the next level with this line of hydraAromatherapy shower bursts. Place one of them in the shower and not only will your shower get you clean, but it will make you feel better too! The shower bursts come in scents like Rise & Shine (tangerine and mint), Energize (grapefruit and basil), Unwind (lavender and mint) and Sweet Dreams (lavender and chamomile). Buy the set for $22.50, individuals for $5.50 each, or grab a bath fizzie, $8 each, at Etcetera.
Prepare for the harsh cold before the dry skin sets in with Revitalize from Moss Hill. A two-ounce tin of the thick shea butter moisturizing cream is excellent for dry cuticles, elbows, toes, feet or all of the above. Other ingredients include beeswax, sweet almond oil and vitamin E. The handmade cream comes in four different fragrances. Find tins of Revitalize for $15 each at Moss Hill.
Bath & body products
Blooms by Essential Details’ original product line has recently rolled out a new bath and body collection that makes it easier, more affordable and more enticing than ever to make that quality “me time” possible. The new line, dubbed Dixie Soul, has everything from bath bombs to sugar scrubs to shower steamers to facial scrubs. Prices vary depending on product and range from $6.95 to $19 at Blooms by Essential Details.
On our last trip to the hair salon, we were introduced to a new product, which we fell head over heels in love with and just had to share. Bedroom.Hair by Kevin.Murphy is the only product you need to finish off your hairstyle every day. The light hairspray achieves a “lived-in” look with shine, hold and texture while leaving your hair moveable. The best part is that it works on all hair types and at $31 won’t break the bank. Find it at J. Estell Salon.
You may have seen some Olympic athletes with strange marks on their bodies during the 2016 Rio games. The marks are a result of cupping, an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction, said to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being. This form of deep-tissue massage creates a vacuum that draws the blood to the surface, bringing it away from the injured area so that healthy blood can circulate and heal the injury. Thankfully you don’t have to be an Olympian to partake in the practice. You can get it for $10 as an add-on to a massage or $30 on its own at J Michael’s Spa and Salon.
TRANSITION TO AUTUMN
It may still be summer, but we’re looking forward to fall, and Kozy Kandles are just what we need to get us ready for the new season. These hand-poured soy candles made in small batches by Emily Gray — a local maker who is based right across the river in Jeffersonville, Indiana — burn clean and evenly to fill the room with fragrances that are phthalate-free. The best part is that the candle leaves little to no soot in your jar, which means you can reuse the jar in other ways. Four-ounce candles are $6 each or two for $10, 8-ounce candles are $10, and 12-ounce candles are $15. Emily and her Kozy Kandles can be found at local farmers’ markets and flea markets, as well as on the shelves in Regalo on Fourth Street.
Football-themed towel and bottle opener
Celebrate the return of football in the only way Southerners know how — with a tailgate party. Football-themed items add the perfect touch to any sports soiree. We particularly love this dish towel and bottle opener set. It also makes for a great hostess gift. Find the set for $18 at Work the Metal.
If you thought summer was a whirlwind of weddings, buckle up. Fall is quickly becoming a popular season to tie the knot. Prepare for all the showers with wedding gifts from Mark’s Hallmark USA Oxmoor and Mark’s Hallmark USA Gardiner Lane. Each location has a section solely devoted to marital bliss. We grabbed a few of our favorites to inspire your next bridal gift. Find the “Loving” figurine for $37, the “Mr & Mrs” picture frame for $38.99 and the “days till I do” mug for $13.
What’s in a name? Something Blue carries more than just clothes. Like their name implies, they carry plenty of items designed especially for brides. We particularly love these three items, all perfect for asking your best friends to stand by your side on your big day. Find the bridesmaid glass for $14, the bridesmaid koozie for $10 and the “Bestie” zippered pouch for $12 at Something Blue.
There you have it. It’s still summer, but fall is closer than we think — we hope these August FINDS help you enjoy the best of both seasons!
