As we welcome the excitement of a fresh, new year, we also welcome updated fashion trends worth trying. In 2020, we’re forecasting patterns including houndstooth and an elevated check, vibrant outerwear and a modern spin on the classic ’90s denim and shearling coat. Transitional dresses in rich jewel tones paired effortlessly with chic (and practical) boots and head-to-toe monochromatic looks that encourage playing with tones like warm brown, grey or white and cream round out our list. Here’s how to style each trend as well as a few of our favorite current buys. Take a look at this year’s winter fashion trends!

WINTER FASHION TREND: PATTERNS

Houndstooth

Houndstooth gained popularity throughout 2019, and that will continue through this new year. The great thing about this specific pattern is that it easily pairs with a number of items and adds a touch of interest to a look without feeling over-the-top.

From slim trousers (notice the v cut in the leg of the trousers below — this is another 2020 trend that elongates the leg and shows off the shoe), slingback block heels and office-appropriate dresses to chic blouses, wide-leg belted trousers and the ever-so-trendy oversized blazer, houndstooth pieces are easy to find and even easier to wear without much effort. Pair these items with a black turtleneck, dark denim or classic black pumps for a timeless look.

Check

Check, a pattern that seems to come and go, is back for 2020. Similar to houndstooth, this one is easy to pair with a number of items, but as the pattern makes a statement, it’s most flattering to keep the rest of the look neutral. We’re particularly drawn to black and white check patterns, warm browns or accessories that add both a splash of color and pattern like the red scarf shown below. It’s easy to find a checked piece right now, especially an oversized blazer, long coat or pant. Here are a few of our favorites.

WINTER FASHION TREND: OUTERWEAR

Shearling Accents & Bright Colors

There are two 2020 outerwear trends that top our list. The first is a coat with shearling accents. Often, you’ll see this as an oversized denim jacket with a shearling collar or cuffs, or a faux leather or moto-jacket with shearling details throughout. Both offer a stylish way to add texture to a look while keeping warm.

The second outerwear trend we’re seeing this year is a coat, trench or long jacket in a bright and vibrant shade. Here, we’re showcasing a pink option, an on-trend mustard shade and an elegant pale blue coat. Each gives a look it’s own added glam. Don’t feel obligated to wear these with just neutral looks! These jackets look beautiful styled with complementary shades or as a standout piece.

WINTER FASHION TREND: EVERYDAY WEAR

Transitional Dresses

An everyday trend ideal for this season and transitioning through the year is a midi-length dress paired with tall boots. 2020 favorites are rich jewel-toned dresses that are figure-flattering, and knee-high boots with a pointed toe and block heel. Here, we’ve pulled together a complete look great for a date night, GNO or day at the office. Pair this gorgeous emerald dress with simple gold hoops, a sleek black jacket and tan heeled boots. Top it off with a plum-colored scarf for an unexpected, yet stylish color combination.

Tonal Outfits

Head-to-toe monochromatic looks are another go-to trend this year. We love a warm brown, camel-colored outfit, but shades of grey or a mix of white and cream are equally chic. The key to wearing this trend is to play with a few tones that complement each other without perfectly matching. Here, we’ve paired a camel-colored turtleneck with a slightly darker brown pant, red-brown boots (with a block heel, pointed toe, faux snakeskin finish and high ankle cut — another fabulous look for 2020!) and either a tan jacket or, if you’re craving added pattern, a long, checked coat that nods to the tones of the other pieces. Give this one a try for drinks with a girlfriend or a work event.
