Winter Dermal Beauty Do’s

November 13, 2011 by Lindsey Hedgepeth

Falling leaves, rising MLGW bills and unpleasant dry skin are just some of the things that accompany the falling temps. While we can’t control it all, I have asked dermal expert Mona Sappenfield to share some of her winter skin tips with us so that we can keep our skin looking good all season long. Be sure and mark your calendar for the three-day Merry Mona Holiday Open House coming up Nov. 17-19. Mona Spa is located at 5101 Sanderlin Center, Suite 101.
The Open House kicks off Thursday morning at 10 am with treats from Simply Delicious, complimentary spa treatments, makeup application, free drawings for Latisse, free holiday gift wrap, $10 Botox then enjoy an After Hours Social until 7 pm with savory delights from Chef Jose at River Oaks. Other vendors participating in the Open House festivities include Rebecca Rivalto Interiors, Cafe Las Flores Plantation Coffee and Grits from Nicaragua, Kai Fragrance, Jan Marini and Artists Micharl Maness and Joy Routt. This could just be your one-stop shop for holiday gifts. But be sure and treat yourself while you are there. Now let’s hear from Mona!

Do’s from  Mona:

When Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall, “cracked”, and all the kings men couldn’t put him back together again, it must have been in the middle of winter! Taking up a wise course to protect and balance the skin will help during even the harshest winter chill to prevent dryness and cracking of the skin.

DO visit your aesthetician and say bye-bye to dull layers of skin that have been exposed to too much sun and bronzing products with a professional enzyme peel. Even the most delicate skin will benefit from the cornucopia of natural, gentle and effective enzymes to polish the skin for a dewy, fresh complexion. The wonderful midwinter trips to the warm, breezy beach will throw the skin into a winter flurry of irritation and break out. This pro enzyme technique will gently, deeply polish the most trouble skin.

DO take home your aesthetician’s recommendation of at-home enzyme skin mask. Investing in this multi-tasked cosmetic product is certainly worth it. Apply June Jacobs Pumpkin Enzyme Mask  to the cuticles on your hands and feet for softening of the hard skin build up. You will want to apply the delicious kai body butter to dry elbows, knees and patchy skin under cotton clothing. You’ll discover how well the natural cosmetic and cotton fibers harmonize to soften and soothe dry skin.

Kai Body Butter

DO get some oxygen back to clear the head. Back to business and post holiday stress interrupts exercise and the routine that your “outer self” skin shell thrives on. Exercise daily, and experience  a Jet Oxygen Facial  that delivers vitamins and minerals via pure oxygen to needy skin cells. The oxygen molecules expand the skin so that nutrient starved skin cells attract hydrators, vitamins and minerals with ease. Smoother and plumper skin emerges immediately after the treatment. Pure oxygen also destroys bacteria on the skin’s surface for a gentle purification to clear acne and mild break out.

DO replace “hot toddies” and coffee with a healthy balance of green tea, citrus and plenty of pure water to reinforce the fragile blood capillaries and help keep them from appearing on the skin’s surface. When you see one, quickly seek out an experienced laser technician for an Excel Laser Facial Vein treatment… each visible vein attracts others like magnets!

DO apply  June Jacobs Intensive Moisturizing Mask, like a thick “mardi gras” mask to prevent an excessively taut feeling to the skin. The gel formulations are proven to stimulate circulation and will tighten, tone and improve color by nourishing the skin with moisturizers but can also feel irritating in winter if allowed to dry too quickly on the skin. Apply a thick gel or cream masque daily until the skin noticeably softens.

Intense Moisturizing Mask

DO keep a cool head, not cold one! Wear a hat, gloves and socks to prevent loss of the body temperature causing dry and itchy skin from head to toe. Get the best result when you smooth kai body lotion under it all.

Kai Body Lotion

DO purchase a baby bottle warmer to warm the temperature of your body lotions and creams and forget about freezing from the chill of applying moisturizers. Indulge in massaging warm kai body butter or kai body lotion all over, starting with the bottom of your feet, to create a warm body glove of penetrating moisturizers. Moisturizers are best absorbed when applied immediately after a shower or bath on slightly damp skin.

DO take notice of re-growth of unwanted face and body hair. Winter is a great time to treat aggressive hair growth with CoolGlide Laser for a more permanent solution for smoother and lasting results. While hair growth patterns are pre-determined before birth by genetics, it is certain that it will grow faster in winter to keep you fuzzy and warm. Laser hair reduction takes multiple treatments and the best bet lasers work deep to destroy the new forming hair bulb while it is in the actively growing stage of hair regrowth.  You can shave the area along the process to stimulate even faster growth and be looking very sleek for summer.  Just before the swimming pool opens, one spa pro waxing of the area usually removes all the dead and weakened hair that you have laser treated all winter. Amazing results…both men and women love it.

DO care for the entire eye area to prevent dry eye symptoms. If you are feeling dry skin tugging, you probably are looking at a new invasion of fine lines, too. When the eye is dry, its biological mechanism for moisturizing is to pull moisture from the surrounding skin tissues, causing fine lines and wrinkles. Eye soothing and moisturizing drops applied in the eye can be a cool and refreshing all day beauty bonus along with moisturizing eye gels and creams applied to the skin. Try REVALÉSKIN® Replinishing Eye Therapy containing skin firming antioxidant ingredients. When the eye area is already feeling sensitive from dryness, a firming gel can be replaced or layered with a Jan Marini Age Intervention Eye Cream. Apply the gel next to the skin and top off with the cream.

REVALÉSKIN® Replenishing Eye Therapy

Jan Marini Age Intervention Eye Cream

DO treat fragile skin to the new “cellular intervention” skin creams and serums like REVALÉSKIN® Intense Recovery Treatment  or Jan Marini Transformation Face Cream with continuous ingredient delivery technology providing skin protecting ingredients deep into the layers of the skin throughout the day and night. Most all have invisible line fillers, pentipeptides, that hide fine lines until you wash it off. Targeted delivery ingredients will build the delicate barrier function beneath your moisturizers to keep the skin cells healthy through climate changes.

REVALÉSKIN® Intense Recovery Treatment

DO visit the spa for deep tissue massage with Spa Ritual Vegan Geranium or Ginger Body Lotion, especially if you are traveling and feeling sluggish. The body’s metabolism slows and stores fat in winter…it’s a fact. Deep tissue massage and TriActive LaserDermology will improve micro circulation of the blood and by increasing circulation it can help mobilize internal fluids the may be wearing you down. New technology offers mechanical deep tissue massage combined with gentle lasers can give you added benefits of skin toning and tightening, cellulite reduction, and relief from muscle pain. Visit the spa for a 25-minute treatment (Everyday; if you wish) because it makes you feel great and you will look great for Spring Break!

DO incorporate beauty into everyday of your life with the touch of a friend or a hug for your children and remember that a warm kind heart glows with radiant beauty in every season.

Thanks, Mona!
