School is back in session, football practices have begun and the weather is cooling off (theoretically), which means September is almost here! And as Labor Day sets the fall activities in motion, there are a ton of things happening here in Atlanta … and a ton of great outfit choices! First up, we flex our cerebral muscles and literally show off our literacy at the AJC Decatur Book Festival; next, we rock our faces off at Atlanta’s one-and-only Music Midtown; and finally, we close the month with the ooey, gooey, delicious Cheese Fest. So let’s get shopping!

The Event: AJC Decatur Book Festival

  • September 2 – 4, 2016
  • Various events throughout the weekend include readings, panel discussions, poetry slams, live music and more
  • Festival-related activities will occur at venues throughout Decatur
  • Free and open to the public

Life may get chaotic, and sometimes the easiest way of escaping the stress is diving into a good book. The AJC Decatur Book Festival celebrates the drama, imagination and talent of the country’s best current writers. The three days are bursting with activities and panel discussions for the entire family. Highlights include a tribute to bestselling author Pat Conroy as the keynote event, a panel on “Celebrating Georgia’s Pulitzer Prize Winners,” and even cooking demos by bestselling cookbook authors. We will say it like this: The AJC Decatur Book Festival is so crammed with events, the best way to determine what you want to do is visit the website, select a day, then select from the “tracks,” which include interests like humanities, science, The Atlanta Writers Club and more!

What to wear: No doubt that attendees are the well-read type and thus, probably know a lot about the world. Continue that trend by dressing in clothes that celebrate a worldly perspective, most notably from Lilith in West Midtown. This women’s boutique, which originally started in Nancy, France, has a major European aesthetic, using unexpected, offbeat fabrics and nontraditional colors. Lilith’s creative, authentic styles show off a woman’s sense of self and individuality in a very cool, fun way.

The Event: Music Midtown

  • September 17 – 18, 2016
  • Piedmont Park
  • Two-day general admission ticket costs $125 (as of press time). Check the website for additional ticket prices and packages

Atlanta’s homegrown, traffic-stopping music festival is back! This year’s Music Midtown has a lineup of more than 30 artists across four stages, including The Killers, Twenty One Pilots, Beck, The Lumineers, Kesha, Alabama Shakes and many more. In addition to the music, ticket holders can stuff their faces with great food from local chefs, check out booths from sponsors and friends of the event, and just spend an unforgettable weekend in Piedmont Park with a few thousand of your closest friends.

What to wear: An outdoor music festival like Music Midtown is tough to dress for — you want to look cute, feel comfortable and not freak out if someone spills beer near/on you (let’s be honest; that’s definitely going to happen). We love the clothes from Collage Boutique — with three locations in Brookhaven, Marietta and Decatur — because they’re stylish, on trend and won’t break the bank. The variety of denim alone is enough to have you coming back for more and the great tops (including a few tie-dye printed tunics that I NEED in my closet now) are perfect for a day spent listening to music. Bonus: Collage has excellent accessories, which, as we all know, completes that special look. By the way, all the purses we chose are hands-free, cross-body styles since we assume you’ll be holding a beer in one hand and rocking out with the other.

The Event: The Cheese Fest

  • Friday, September 30, 2016, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Located at Freight Depot Building in Downtown Atlanta (near Georgia State University)
  • General admission tickets are $35 ($45 at the door); VIP tickets are $75 (limited quantity available)

To quote the great Steve Urkel, “Got any cheese?!” Well … on September 30, Atlanta does when it hosts The Cheese Fest, a fun and tasty event that celebrates the art of cheese making and cheese eating. Ticket holders sample cheeses from around the world and meet the artisans responsible for creating the delicacies. Guests also enjoy access to the Meltdown/Macdown (grilled cheese competition between local chefs), live music by Packway Handle and the chance to purchase some of the cheese you fall in love with. In fact, this event has become so big and popular, the organizers have expanded it outside of Atlanta to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Houston, Texas, as well.

What to wear: The Cheese Fest is a fun way to enjoy dairy’s finest invention while also socializing with friends and listening to some great music. We went to Frolic Boutique, with two locations in Buckhead, to come up with some great outfits that will keep you dressed as sharp as a fine Wisconsin cheddar. One of our favorite things about Frolic is that many of the boutique’s items have unexpected details that will set your look apart from the crowd — an embroidered sleeve, a keyhole collar, a modern hemline. These details, combined with the high-quality fabrics and timeless styles, make Frolic Boutique a must-visit for this event and any other. Take a look at the fine stone necklaces in the middle of the store as well, many of which are made by local Atlanta artists.

This necklace has a nice weight to it, due to the gorgeous amazonite stones, and would make a great addition to lots of items at Frolic Boutique.
