Did you know roughly 40% of engagements occur between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day? If you’re one of the many brides-to-be who has started sporting a diamond on your left ring finger in recent weeks, you’re probably in the thick of planning your wedding — and your honeymoon. After all, the only thing more exciting than the big day itself is the promise of a fantastic vacation to follow. Well, a vacation and a lifetime of wedded bliss, of course. Sifting through the nitty-gritty details of flights, resorts and destinations can be overwhelming and exhausting. Instead of sifting through endless Google searches, think of us as your one-stop honeymoon destination shop. We spoke with the owner of Southern travel agency Epperly Travel and recent newlywed herself, Lindsey Epperly Sulek, about the top honeymoon destinations of 2019. She dishes on all of your burning questions and will help you make the most of your honeymoon from start to finish.

Honeymoon destinations

Newly engaged? Cheers! Now let’s start planning that honeymoon!

As the owner of a boutique travel company, Lindsey certainly knows a thing or two about planning a top tier vacation. While it might be true that the devil is in the travel details, the love, according to Lindsey, is in destination communication. “The absolute best thing that honeymooners can do is get on the same page with one another about their top priorities. Are you looking for a once-in-a-lifetime getaway, all of the relaxation in the world or to see and do as much as possible?” Once you determine your top priorities, you can start to tackle a potential itinerary.

Lindsey describes zeroing in on trendy honeymoon destinations as a coin toss. “Honeymooners are split down the middle: Some are seeking a ‘fly and flop’ beach destination; others are seeking a totally new adventure that combines activities and relaxation.” However, despite this divide in adventure seekers and sunbathers, Lindsey says most modern travelers are seeking one thing: “a hotel or experience that promotes a sense of place — authenticity really resonates with today’s traveler.”

So what’s trending in 2019? Here’s what Lindsey has to say.

The Top Honeymoon Destinations for 2019

French Polynesia

For an idyllic, paradisiacal honeymoon, French Polynesia is at the top of Lindsey’s list. She says, “The postcards of over-water bungalows will never do them justice. You’ve just got to see them for yourselves! With the addition of the all-inclusive private island resort, The Brando, and the fantastic hotel renovations going on in Bora Bora at the Four Seasons, the destination of French Polynesia allows travelers to experience an over-water bungalow without having to fly quite as far as the Maldives.”

St. Kitts and Nevis

If you’re up for a tropical locale, but you want something a little closer to home, Lindsay says St. Kitts and Nevis is your dual-destination solution. “The newly opened Park Hyatt St. Kitts is the first five-star beach resort of its kind on the island, so it’s still relatively undiscovered,” explains Lindsey. “Even more undiscovered is the neighboring island of Nevis where the Four Seasons is being refurbished and will be better than ever.” Lindsey also says there’s the added perk of hitting two islands instead of one. The trip makes “for an awesome split stay opportunity for beach lovers who might go stir crazy for a full week in one spot.”

Another stunning spot for seaside splendor in 2019 and beyond is Anguilla. Lindsey notes, “After renovations on all of the major hotels post-2017 hurricane season, like the charming Zemi Beach House, the renowned Cap Juluca and the sizzling Four Seasons, this off-the-radar island is back and better than ever in terms of luxury accommodations and a fantastic beach scene.” To make the most of your trip south, Lindsey recommends using Anguilla as a home base to see even more exquisite surroundings. “Enjoy a day trip over to the posh island of St. Barth’s for a totally different cultural perspective. Or even better, do a split stay between the two!”

European wanderlusters should look no further than Portugal. According to Lindsey, this trendy honeymoon spot is a diamond in the rough. “The lesser-known gem of Europe is getting the attention it deserves from travelers, which means we’ve only got another year or so of this amazing country flying under the radar. Portugal is the perfect spot for unique culture, architecture, beaches and even wineries, so it’s the perfect getaway for honeymooners who want the allure of Italy without the prices and crowds … yet.”

New Zealand

The final on-trend destination for 2019? New Zealand. Lindsey explains it perfectly: “A travel day like the one required to get to New Zealand should be rewarded, and it is just as soon as you step foot in this incredible destination. Between the fantastic exploring that can be done on the North Island, like the wine lover’s island of Waiheke, to the other-worldly scenes you’ll find on the South Island, there are so many reasons to love New Zealand.” It’s also ideal for those looking to experience more than just beaches. “Not only is Queenstown the adventure capital of the world, but it’s also one of the most aesthetically beautiful places I’ve personally seen,” says Lindsey. “There are so many reasons to love New Zealand, not to mention the friendliest people on earth, super safe and easy internal flights (no security!) and wineries dotting the landscape of each region, north to south.”

While these destinations are certainly ideal for honeymooners, let’s not forget the benefits of a wonderful vacation in general —honeymoon or not. No matter who you are or what your purpose, there’s nothing like a getaway to relax, recharge and reconnect.

Happy travels!
