Ever since Sharon Stone walked the Oscars’ red carpet in a Gap basic, women everywhere have embraced the simplicity and versatility of a good t-shirt as a wardrobe necessity. With no dearth of options out there, the challenge becomes selecting which tees work best in your own closet that will last through multiple cleanings. The recent demise of a favorite skinny tee triggered an unexpected outcry as I told my husband NOT to empty my hamper anymore — feel free to tackle kids clothes, towels, sheets, whatever, but I’ll wash my own clothes, thanks. (Yes, the sentence “Don’t do laundry, I will” actually emerged from my lips.)

Our first candidates: VINCE, Splendid, Soft Joie

While not as complicated as finding the right jeans or the nightmare of the annual swimsuit search, buying a nice tee involves quite a bit of consideration. Fit, fabric, stretch, shape, length, line, comfort and cuteness all factor into the equation. What falls crisp and neat on a slight figure could be tight and trashy on a curvier frame. Then, of course, sizing can be completely different from one style to the next, even by the same designer. We’ve all grabbed one or two from major chain stores, but they don’t become a favorite unless it looks just right. Sometimes it’s better to invest more time in shopping, so I grabbed a friend to investigate this season’s sound solutions.

For a splurge style in the VINCE selections, the beautiful rayon Dolman Tee ($115) has an updated boxy shape with a gentle silhouette pulling in at the waist.

Vince Little Boy T (left) and Shirt-tail Little Boy Tee (right)

VINCE brand’s signature Little Boy T-Shirt comes in couple of styles that appealed to both of us. The Fitted Tee ($60) shows off a nice shape without being too clingy and was long enough to tuck in neatly. The Shirt-Tail Little Boy Tee  ($78) style falls slightly looser with dropped shoulders and a curved hem.  Both are made of a soft pima/modal blend that remains substantial though lightweight. We tried these on at the Phipps store and have seen VINCE at 310 Rosemont .

Two favorites from Splendid: The Miami ($68) cotton slub relaxed fit tee shows off cap sleeves, a scoop neck, and shirttail hem; The Whisper V-neck ($64) sports a little cuff detail, a longer hem and a substantial fine-gauge cotton. Find Splendid tees at Hemline Vinings as well as other locations around the city.

Soft  Joie

Soft Joie offers up some lovely pieces that seem to float across the body. Light and cool when the heat flares to its peak, these also work well layered with a sweater or jacket into the early fall, or shielding against arctic blasts of A/C.

Alara ($68) hangs slightly below the hip and runs a bit larger. Corby’s ($88) linen/cotton blend feels fresh and raw-edged sleeves flutter against sun-kissed shoulder.

Michael Stars

Michael Stars’ collection brings a twist to the knits we’ve grown to love. In addition to the Phipps Plaza store, Michael Stars can be found at several boutiques around town including Hand In Pocket, Squash Blossom and Frolic.

Michael Stars, fresh and fun colors.

Michael Stars 60 Singles V-Neck Tee ($54) of supima cotton fits gently where you want it and falls away where you need it. Beautiful. Shine Capsleeve CrewNeck Tee ($48) makes that tricky “BabyT” a little more grown-up.

Lilly Pulitzer

There’s more to Lilly Pulitzer than legendary prints — including T-shirts with flirty feminine flair. The Mardi Top ($58) skims the body in pima cotton jersey, while a scoop neck and adorable shirred sleeves add a delicate twist to a modified ballerina cut tee. The Hilly Top ($88) gives a similar fit through the torso with a classic crew neck and eyelet detail at the sleeve edge.

Meet Mardi & Hilly, two darlings created by Lilly Pulitzer. Hang out with these cute chicks and all their Lilly pals at Mint Julep.

Have a great weekend!
