Remember the tag line from that old American Express ad, “Don’t leave home without it”? The same philosophy applies to sunscreen, especially this time of year. Although harmful UV rays are always present regardless of temperature or season, during summer months we do tend to be outdoors more. The days are simply longer and the sun is stronger, which means we all need to be vigilant about taking the time to make a plan to protect our faces. Wrinkles are not the only consequence of overexposure: the real fear, at least for me, is skin cancer. And as a point of clarification, when I say face, I also mean the equally at-risk skin of the neck and décolleté – all areas that are the first to show signs of aging and damage.
Of the three main ways to protect yourself (i.e. sunscreen, protective clothing and avoidance) today, our focus is on sunscreen and tinted moisturizers with a high SPF.
2-in-1 Protection: There are plenty of daily and tinted moisturizers that come loaded with serious SPF, which you can slather on each day to make your skin look divine, as well as shield it from the sun. These products work when worn under a heavier foundation, or on their own for a more natural look. And rule of thumb: apply sunscreen and SPF tinted moisturizers liberally in the morning, and reapply when you’re out in the sun longer than two hours, or after swimming or sports that cause you to perspire.
The products that follow cover a wide range of prices, and while some are our favorites, the ones we haven’t tried rank tops in national polls:
Le Metier De Beaute, Peau Vierge – Sunscreen, moisturizer, collagen stimulation, Retinol treatment, coverage… a wonder cream. Available locally at Woo Skincare + Cosmetics.
Oil of Olay Definity Color Recapture. While $30 is high for a drugstore product, we find this one can stand up to the big boys.
Laura Mercier – This tinted moisturizer is seen as the one to beat in the beauty industry. The gold standard. With over 2,000 reviews, Sephora customers give it 4.5 stars out of 5. Available locally at Private Edition.
Becca Luminous Skin has a cult-like following. Available locally at Wax Nashville.
No.7 Soft and Sheer – Target. Total bargain and it totally works.
Revision Skin Care Intellishade SPF 45 – Currently Elizabeth’s favorite. It’s called “Intellishade” as it promises to flawlessly match all skin tones while reducing the look of of fine lines and wrinkles. Available locally at Retief Skin Care.
Origins Nude and Improved – The name pretty much says what we are all looking for, eh? Sheer coverage and a high rating when doing our online research. Available at Dillard’s and the Origins Store.
And, sunscreen with moisture but no tint:
La Roche-Posay – Available at Walgreen’s and Private Edition. This is the sunscreen people used to buy on the Black Market (seriously… I know this because I was one of those “people” buying illegal sunscreen) before the FDA approved Mexoryl for use in America. Now, Amy is a big fan as well.
Lots of options. Find one you like and USE it!!
