Southern Voice: Sue Gambla
So today I wasn’t paying attention! I had other things on my mind and even though the nice police officer flashed his lights at me to remind me to slow down, I continued on my sweet way. Well, red flashing lights in your rearview mirror will make you pay attention real quick! As I’m waiting and getting nervous for his slow walk to my car, I’m still wondering why he pulled me over. SPEEDING! And not just speeding, but in a school zone! (Thank you, Lord, no kids were around.)
Okay, I do speed (not going to lie), but I ALWAYS pay attention especially in the school zones. But not today. I am shaking when the nice officer (yes, he was nice) asked for my info and I told him I never get pulled over (which is the truth!) thinking he may decide why mess with this lady’s record of no speeding tickets?
Well, he’s not going along with my story and hands me my ticket. This isn’t a ticket, it’s a small car payment! Like, WOW!! I am grateful for an understanding husband who wasn’t going to kill me. Can I be grateful in the midst of a massive ticket?
My darling husband reminds me I wasn’t in an accident, and no one was hurt. So it’s just a reminder to pay more attention. After the ticket I learned of a friend whose dog passed away, a friend whose dad has cancer, a hard-working friend putting in long, tireless hours, and I saw the sweetest tiny, purple flowers growing among the weeds.
I heard someone say after Hurricane Michael that they started living with their face down. They stopped looking at the broken trees and huge reconstruction needed but began looking at what they could pay attention to … flowers growing among the weeds. It’s not always easy to see the good in the sticky, nasty muck of life, but like that beautiful flower growing through the weeds, if we can live with our heads down in gratitude and humility and ask not “Why me?”, but “What is the lesson to be learned?”, we will see the beauty rising above whatever circumstances we face.
