If you spend your days dreaming of a kitchen renovation, you’re not alone. Homeowners across the country have a craving for change, and we are finding inspiration from dream-worthy spaces by Southern designers like the creative force behind Heather Chadduck Interiors. Birmingham-based interior designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas has a portfolio of projects that are all distinctive and range in style from coastal to cottage. Her work has caught the attention of homeowners and design lovers like us for their combined beauty and practicality. The balancing act is not easy to master, but these kitchen designs make the task seem effortless as Heather tackles projects in her hometown and beyond.

Some of Heather’s designs are bright and white with nods to a farmhouse aesthetic; others incorporate elements that deliver a smart contrast between traditional and contemporary, and some embody classic Southern charm. Each design reflects the designer’s distinct ability to mix antiques, patterns and color, and each space inspires us to rethink our kitchen design. The kitchen is a room that must multitask, but the aesthetics are equally important.

The elements that embody the ideal kitchen are highly individual, so before you begin your next kitchen renovation, consider what the perfect kitchen looks like for you.

An Interior Designer’s 4 Favorite Southern Kitchens

Coastal Kitchen

The kitchen in this coastal house is clearly the hub of the home, and it pulls double duty as the central place to work and gather. Heather completed this kitchen for the 2019 Southern Living Idea House, located at Crane Island in Amelia Island, Florida. She chose a scenic Gracie handpainted wallpaper for the backsplash and protected it with a glare-free Plexi covering to bring a sense of scenery into the space. Because the kitchen lacks windows, this design feature creates an illusion of indoor/outdoor living.

Storage also became a priority in the design, and a hidden pantry (to the left of the kitchen) provides storage space and keeps the kitchen neat and organized.

Colonial Home

The kitchen flooring in Heather’s personal family home is painted in a graphic pattern to “pack a punch” without detracting from the light and airy design. The house is a 100-year-old clapboard colonial home, and the kitchen is one of its standout spaces. A design detail to note: there aren’t any upper cabinets in the kitchen; this was a thoughtful decision that keeps the space open and makes it feel grander in size and scale. The walls of windows invite natural light to fill the space. When the sun sets, playful lighting positioned on either side of the range hood illuminates the interiors.

Don’t overlook the cutting boards on the counters and the baskets beneath the island that add personality and texture to the design. We could stare at this space for hours and still uncover new things to love.

Cottage-Style Design

This cottage kitchen got a new lease on life after a fire in the home damaged the space. Heather revived the design with reclaimed wood flooring, white wood-paneled walls and vintage-inspired lighting to anchor the island that lives in the center of the kitchen. The simple-but-stylish cottage style feels right at home in Blount Springs, Alabama.

Heather made the most of the space with an island that seats four. In a pinch, the seating can be moved to the side to allow for more workspace or an open area for guests to gather. Our favorite feature? The artwork, breadbox and vintage scale.

Mini Kitchen

Located in the guest cottage of a home in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, this mini kitchen and bar area received a fresh coat of paint on the floors and a ticking striped wallpaper to add interest. The reclaimed wood countertops contribute rustic charm, the artwork gives a nod to the setting, and a fabric skirt hides a mini-refrigerator fit for guests. Overall, Heather created a dreamy scene that we’d be happy to call home for a weekend.
