By now, you’ve seen the majority of this season’s hottest trends and decided whether or not they’re for you. The only question left? Should we save or splurge? To help you make the decision, we’ve rounded up both affordable and indulgent options in beauty, fashion and, of course, summer shoes to steer you in whatever direction your wallet requires. Whether you’re looking for a luxe love or an affordable find, you’ll find it here. So, let’s talk summer trends!
SAVE OR SPLURGE: BEAUTY
The summer months require a good moisturizer. Whether we’re out by the pool, on a tropical vacation, hiking, biking, camping or just running errands, our skin will inevitably be dry and damaged by the end of the day. Both of these moisturizers offer an intense surge of hydration that cools and calms irritated skin. Although they are quite different in formula, they definitely compare in performance and long-lasting hydration.
SAVE: The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel ($18.39) has quickly become a favorite among the beauty community. It’s ultra lightweight, yet packs a seriously hydrating punch.
SPLURGE: La Mer is know for its luxurious products, and the Creme de La Mer ($175) is probably the most iconic of their collection. This one is thicker than our “save” option and offers a creamier yet similarly hydrating finish.
With so much of the season spent outside (and let’s be honest, sweating), a lightweight, effortless complexion product is essential. Both of these options offer a sheer to medium coverage and a finish that’s both dewy and naturally flawless.
SAVE: Physician’s Formula Super BB Cream ($15.99) is at the top of every “Best Buys at the Drugstore” list. It has everything you crave in a summer foundation — easy application, radiant finish and barely there feel.
SPLURGE: The Giorgio Armani Crema Nuda ($120) will provide a similar finish at a much higher price point. We will admit, this foundation feels silky smooth compared to Physician Formula’s sometimes sticky finish. And the dewy, youthful outcome is unbeatable.
Another summer beauty essential is a good blow dryer. Whether you’re planning a date night after a day spent by the pool, or you’re headed out on the town after a beach-filled day, you’ll need a high-quality blow dryer to get your strands smooth and shiny. We love both of these for different reasons.
SAVE: The Sephora Mini Blast blow dryer ($32) is one of those small, but mighty tools. It’s compact enough to travel with and store easily, yet is strong enough to dry hair in a timely fashion.
SPLURGE: On the other end of the save or splurge spectrum is this ultra-luxe Dyson blow dryer. After making a major splash in the beauty world, this $500 tool became a must-have for those willing to indulge in such a hefty price tag. To be fair, this will cut your drying time literally in half and does a top-notch job of leaving hair smooth, soft and ready to style.
SAVE OR SPLURGE: FASHION
We can’t be the only ones who just don’t love donning a pair of shorts regardless of the hot summer temperatures. Thankfully, one of this season’s biggest trends is a pair of high-waisted, boyfriend-style jeans in a summer-friendly light wash. We prefer to go for a cropped, ankle length cut in the summer months & love a frayed hem for an added touch of distressed style.
SAVE: Is it just us or are these jeans basically identical? Our save option comes in a light to medium wash, crops right at the ankle and provides that oh-so-trendy high-waisted touch for just $45. Find them here.
SPLURGE: If you’re looking for something a bit more indulgent, these high-waisted boyfriend jeans ($320) will last you through the season and far beyond. They’re the “it” pair of denim for 2019!
We’re sure you’ve seen your favorite style icon rocking a silk scarf this season. Tie it around your neck in myriad ways, on your ponytail or around the strap of your handbag for a pop of pattern and color. Both of these scarves can be styled however you prefer and offer a similar floral touch.
SAVE: This soft, feminine scarf from Anthropologie may be affordable at $38, but that doesn’t mean it’s cheap! The quality is fantastic, the size allows for versatility, and the pattern is timeless.
SPLURGE: This Gucci scarf ($850), on the other hand, is about as splurge-worthy as it gets. The fabric quality is simply beautiful, and it will immediately elevate any look.
For all those summer weddings and outdoor celebrations, a sweet, flattering, ruffled maxi dress is a fantastic addition to your wardrobe. We love both of these options for their flirty feel, on-trend tiered ruffles and flattering cut.
SAVE: This pale blue maxi dress ($99) in a floral pattern can take you from a summer wedding to date night to GNO in a breeze. It’s soft, easy to wear and relatively affordable.
SPLURGE: This pretty little number ($695) from Anthropologie is worth its price tag. This one will last you far past the summer season, and its delicate details, in both shape and style, are top-of-the-line.
SAVE OR SPLURGE: SHOES
Animal print — and specifically leopard print — isn’t going out of style anytime soon. One of our favorite ways to wear the trend is through a pair of statement-making shoes. Both of these options touch on a few current trends — animal print, mule style and a shorter heel that’s ideal for both work and play.
SAVE: These leopard print heels ($99.95) are great for wherever your summer takes you. Wear these to the office with a black skirt. Then, go home, change into your favorite pair of jeans and wear them out for a fashionable, on-trend pop of pattern.
SPLURGE: For those who prefer a designer heel, these Prada mules ($950) are to-die-for. We love the height, cut and print. Simply gorgeous!
Love it or hate it, translucent accents are a top trend this year. To be honest, we’re still on the fence with this one, but in a shoe, it does feel rather Cinderella-esque.
SAVE: If you, like us, are unsure of whether this trend is right for you, save a few bucks with this less pricey, strappy heel option for $99.95.
SPLURGE: Or if you’re loving the translucent strap, go for these earthy block heels ($350) that also rock the asymmetric and snakeskin trends.
Espadrilles always make their way back into our wardrobe when the warmer months arrive. This year, though, we’re opting for a platform espadrille that has a block heel and is available in a summery blue hue.
SAVE: We love the pale blue shade of these heels and the fun, funky criss-cross straps. The wedge-like block heel also offers a comfortable way to add height to your look. Snag them for $79.95 here.
SPLURGE: Is there any shoe more splurge-worthy than a Christian Louboutin? We’re drooling over this ’70s-inspired feel, platform heel and deep blue shade. These are $995 here.
