Yes, you will still see teeny bikinis and cheeky Brazilian bottoms this summer at the beach or poolside. But after years of teasing us with their trendiness, one-piece suits are back big time. We first wrote about this trend in 2014, but after just returning from spring break, I even saw high school girls flaunting their stylish one-piece suits. In an era where less has always been more, for this trend, more is definitely … more! If you crave more coverage but still want to feel stylish and current, this is your moment! Today we’re exploring bathing suits that offer more coverage and learning how to wear them well.
Perhaps Amy Adams’ character Sydney, in American Hustle, is responsible for the movement toward the one-piece over the last few years? This white crochet monokini (one-piece bikini … monokini … get it?!) is gorgeous and still covers that little pooch that many of us are uncomfortable with. Perhaps all these celebrities, who posted photos of themselves last summer on Instagram, led to the huge increase in one-piece swimsuit love this summer. Images: Instagram
Here are some of our favorite examples of this season’s swim trend, including options in black, white, patterns and plus sizes:
Nothing is more classic than the one-piece black swimsuit. Whether you want a sexy crocheted look, mesh inserts or classy and sporty, here are some to consider:
This swimsuit has a classic shape with a crisscross design, which allows a little more camouflage right at the belly button (where the crisscross begins) and allows for your sides to stay bare. By Tory Burch for $195. (This same style is available in a blue tie-dye for $215.)
This suit provides a sexy low cut that is far less revealing than most, perfect for the gal who wants “just enough, but not too much.” The subtle ruching is very flattering. SB TIP: Order one to two sizes up, or order both and return one as this suit does run small! By Gottex for $128.
The trend of having a crocheted piece cover what traditionally a bikini would show is definitely a big one. Find this look in many colors, including this black one-piece for $125.
I grew up with a mom who drilled it into me NEVER to wear a white swimsuit. Anyone else? I think that is simply because you need to be abundantly sure you are well-groomed down there to wear a white swimsuit. Regardless, nothing makes your faux or real tan shine more than an icy white swimsuit.
This swimsuit by J.Crew works for smaller busts AND those of us with a larger bust. Available in standard sizes as well as D, DD and a long torso size. Find it here for $98.
This Michael Kors one-piece has a deep plunge and twist, but you do need a flat belly to pull this one off! Find this one for $112.
Don’t forget about Land’s End when it comes to swimwear. Yes, they have all the swim dresses and such, but they specialize in swimwear you don’t have to fuss with, that functions well and that suits whatever style you prefer. This suit is $110.
You need more than one suit, so why not get one with a bright pattern? Here are few that caught our eye:
This swimsuit has a deep plunge as well, and some side cut-outs (look above the hip) but still maintains sweet over sexy. Available at ModCloth (which has a nice assortment of swimsuits) for $160.
These are our favorite plus-size swimsuits that are sure to flatter!
This swimsuit has over 1,200 reviews at Land’s End with an average rating of over four stars! It’s their classic tugless swimsuit, and it comes in black or navy. Find this suit for $49.
Embrace the one-piece swimsuit!
