Fall is a favorite time to travel, whether it’s short weekend getaway or a longer vacation. But, as always, the packing process requires some forethought and attention: two things that most of us busy gals are lacking. Stylist Melissa Gay has created a great packing list for these trips. Just check off your list and enjoy your trip.
Melissa:
Getting ready for a trip can be tricky, where you’re trying to fit everything in a bag, while frantically planning for each possible scenario. Decide on what you’re taking—and just as important, what you’re not taking by following this simple formula:
1. Pack three tops for every bottom.
- You can re-use pants and skirts. Take things that you feel confident in, so you’ll be less inclined to buy more when traveling or bring more stuff.
2. Stick to a color scheme.
- Start with two neutrals for your core basics and add two or three fun shades that coordinate. You also can plan your wardrobe around your shoe color. Commit to a color story when packing and it will save time and space.
3. Accessorize.
- Get a variety of looks with little things, like fun belts, bold jewelry, and printed scarves. These take focus away from the clothes you are wearing and change your whole look.
Basic Pieces

This compilation is from our Eight Essentials for Fall on a Budget post.
- Three to four tops (couple of solid and one pattern). Chic, long-sleeved t-shirts and a tank top for layering work well. Pack a silky dressier top that works under jackets or cardigans or can be left alone for evening. These are great left out and skimming over your hips or tucked into jeans with cute belt. Chambray shirts go with everything and look cute layered under or over pieces. A white blouse is always a classic choice.

The shirt lineup: classic white button down, chambray shirt, fun knit top with suede elbow patches and a cowl-neck, cap-sleeve knit top.
-
A fitted leather jacket is the foundation of your fall getaway wardrobe. A feminine leather jacket is sexy, tough, fashionable and functional. If this isn’t your thing, then bring a feminine blazer that fits great.

- Sophisticated jeans play a big role. Dark wash stovepipe or skinny jeans can be worn in evening with heels and with tall boots over them during the day. These also work with the shorter, ankle boot trend.

J. Crew Matchstick jeans.
- Ponte black pants can be worn for yoga pants or with a cute jacket or cardigan. They don’t wrinkle and come in many styles to suit your shape. Leggings are another option.

- A button-up cardigan, swingy cardigan, or hoodie sweater is essential. These pieces are much better for layering than a pull over sweater and allow for more options.

-
A matte jersey dress or ponte knit (think Diana von Furstenberg) that hits at or above the knee is the perfect choice for a dressy evening out. This can be worn with heels or shoe booties and tights.

-
One pair of ballet flats or loafers, boots, and heels. If you like to be more comfortable and sporty, then a cute yoga shoe can double as a ballet flat and post-workout attire.

-
Take a great statement tote bag that coordinates with your color story. Metallic toned purses go with everything. Make sure to pack a smaller clutch for a lighter load during the day or going out at night.

-
One to two scarves that are part of your color scheme.

Scarves at Pink Julep.
-
Two to three earrings-large studs, hoops and statement earring.

Tassel earrings from Summer Eliason.
-
One to two long layering necklaces that compliment each other. Something with a little sparkle for evening is good, too.

Necklace from W & M Jewelry.
-
Two to three bracelets to mix things up and wear for day or night.
Other options:
- Hat: If you are hat person, a cute wool fedora or beret-style hat can help cover hair and add to your style quotient is helpful to have on a trip.
- Belt: Can be used with tucked-in things or go on the outside of a cardigan to change the look.
- Opaque tights
Have a great trip! Bon Voyage!
