If you could experience life’s milestones like an order at a restaurant, Kim Warren’s may sound like, “New house with an engagement ring on the side!” This Lawrenceville native experienced the best day of her life when Garry Bryant Laney proposed the same night the couple closed on their first home … best day — until the wedding, that is.
On July 30, 2016, nearly a year later (literally only one day short because of the leap year), Kim and Garry added another milestone to their collection when they walked down the aisle and exchanged “I do”s. They chose Decatur as the place where their lives would forever be intertwined and made sure not to sweat the small stuff; just stay in the moment and celebrate the love they share with each other and all of their 180 friends and family who attended the event.
The couple, members of Decatur Presbyterian Church, fell in love with nearby Historic DeKalb Courthouse and decided to plan their wedding around the availability of that venue. The potential and regality of that space, along with the fact that guests would be within walking distance of Decatur’s fabulous restaurants and bars, confirmed that Kim and Garry had to have the Courthouse. July’s heat allowed for more availability and, thus, the wedding planning began!
As the couple developed the look of the event, they also knew that the wedding party would be large because of all the close relationships they’ve maintained with friends over the years. “I had 10 bridesmaids, and Garry had 11 groomsmen,” says Kim. “Each person is so important to us, we just couldn’t imagine not including them in our day and having them stand up with us as we were married.”
The bridesmaids’ dresses were teal while the men’s suits were grey (nothing too overpowering or heavy since this was a July wedding). The formalwear colors complemented the soft, feminine look of the flowers — with shades of ivory, pale pink, deep pink and lavender.
Though the look of the wedding was on the traditional side, this fun-loving couple made sure to let loose with the vibe. Their band, Saved by the Band, brought down the house with their infectious sound and ability to get anyone and everyone out on the dance floor. In fact, the drummer is married to one of Kim’s best friends (who was also a bridesmaid), which added another layer of closeness and connectivity to the party. There’s even proof that Saved by the Band rocked the pants off the wedding guests … “Everyone’s mouths are open in the pictures from the reception because they were singing along all night,” says Kim. “I love our pictures for so many reasons but I really love how (photographer) Anne Simone was able to capture how much fun the night was.”
All that dancing builds up quite the appetite. Lucky for Kim and Garry’s guests, the food offered variety, flavor profiles and overall tastiness. Friends and family enjoyed Endive’s creative menu, which included thin crust duck pizza with fig preserves and blue cheese (“The best appetizer,” says Kim), tomato basil salad (“A staple in my life,” says Kim) and beef short ribs with a Coca-Cola demi-glaze (“They were falling apart and absolutely delicious,” says Kim).
The savory dishes were finished with a delightfully airy wedding cake that featured three layers: chocolate with cookies-and-cream filling, traditional vanilla with salted caramel filling and the top layer was also vanilla with buttercream frosting.
Kim and Garry, who originally met on eHarmony, focused on creating a day that would be a brief escape from life’s stresses and a reminder that all the world really needs is love. “I didn’t want to feel stressed or overwhelmed,” Kim says. “I wanted everyone around me and Garry to be relaxed and happy and not have to worry about anything. And that is exactly how the day went.”
We wish the happy couple a lifetime of love and happiness!
