The South is known for a lot of things. Hospitality, grits, seersucker, “y’all” … the list goes on and on. But in addition to all these things, our region also produces some pretty darn fantastic goods. Enjoy our favorite Southern FINDS that are available at some of the South’s best shops. Take a look …
FASHION & ACCESSORIES
State pride tees
Shops and boutiques throughout the South are full of t-shirts that let you represent your state pride in style! But when we came across The Fiftees, we couldn’t help but fall in love with these unique takes on state shirts. The designs mix vintage with modern and are sprinkled with a sense of humor and plenty of puns. Be sure to include these on your summer vacation packing list to let the locals know what you’re all about. Grab one for $27.50.
Bouquet hair stick
When it’s so hot you have to get your hair off your neck, do so with this elegant hair stick from Hampden Boutique. The ultra-feminine hair stick is made of gold-plated brass, and the daisies are each accented with freshwater pearls for a perfectly vintage look. Find it for $220 at Hampden in Charleston or online.
Super cool shades
Summer is the perfect time to have some fun with your sunglasses. We love these air heart shades from Lola. The thick cat-eye frames offer a retro vibe, perfect for a day spent cruising with the top down. Find them for $69 at Lola Boutique.
The perfect accessory is one that multi-tasks, and the Boca Chica tote from Proud Mary does just that. It’s stylish, sure. And it’s useful — perfect for hauling around all of your accessories. But it also has a feel-good factor — it’s made of recycled plastic bags and hand-crocheted at a women’s co-op in the Dominican Republic. That’s fashion to feel good about for sure! Find it for $148.
FOR THE HOME
One often overlooked home accessory is the lamp. With so many other things such as pillows and throws and area rugs that rush to the top of your home decor wish list, we find that these lighting staples sometimes get forgotten. Edgar-Reeves Lighting helps change that. We love their rosewood table lamps that not only illuminate the room, but add a touch of luxury with a rich, timeless look. Find them for $1,800 for the pair.
When storage bins can look effortlessly chic, well, that’s when we know we’ve got a product to love! These canvas bins available from Alabama Chanin are just that. Made of 100% organic cotton and available in three sizes, these bins are perfect for purposeful storage or for use as a catchall around the house. They’re reversible, too, which means we’re gonna love them twice as long! Available in small, medium and large for $22-$32 each.
If you want to keep your beverage cool but want something a little nicer than a koozie, Jon Carloftis has you covered. With a shape inspired by the classic Kentucky bourbon barrel, this 4-inch pewter beaker is perfect for holding an aluminum can or glass bottle. Find it for $129 online.
The South candle
We usually associate candles flickering in the cold winter months, but the Sweet Tea South candle is perfect for the summer months, filling the home with smells of our favorite Southern beverage. Originating at South Boutique (Nashville and Tuscaloosa locations opening soon!), this candle can now be found at various boutiques throughout the region. This candle comes in other classic Southern smells, including Gunpowder, Antebellum and Sunday Brunch. Snag one for $30.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Sometimes having an all-purpose agent on your team is just what you need. Lauren’s All-Purpose Salve is perfect to have at the ready as it can be used all over — body, face, hair, you name it! Made of all organic ingredients, it can help soften and heal everything from lips to heels and everywhere in between! Find it at Saint Cloud for $40 per 6-ounce jar.
Activated charcoal set
Oily skin is a common concern after a long day out and about in the Southern heat, which is why we love activated charcoal. Known for its ability to draw extra oils out of your skin, activated charcoal keeps your pores from getting clogged with summer sweat. This activated charcoal soap and detox scrub set from Little Seed Farm nourishes and purifies your skin, leaving you feeling fresh. Find it for $25 online or wherever Little Seed Farm products are sold.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
If you love tea, we recommend Piper & Leaf’s artisan tea. While there are only three Piper & Leaf storefronts (Huntsville, AL; Madison, AL; and Birmingham, AL), there are locations all over the country that serve their tea as well as loose leaves. Also, Piper & Leaf now offers a subscription service with three different plans to choose from. We recommend their Briar Patch Brew, their most popular tisane or, for the more adventurous, the Old Fashion Birthday Cake is infused with bergamot and vanilla and makes for a sweat treat. Get it for $9.99.
Popsicles are the perfect summer treat, and with designer flavors that run the gamut, they’re anything but boring. So where can you pick up a cool treat on a hot, humid day? Here are a few Southern popsicle shops to check out, with locations throughout the South and flavors ranging from lavender lemonade to key lime pie to chocolate chili and everything in between. Steel City Pops, based in Birmingham, also has locations in Huntsville, Louisville, Lexington, Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Atlanta. Their pops are made from all-natural or certified organic ingredients, and they use locally harvested products whenever possible. Or, you can check out King of Pops, which is known for popsicles featuring favorite Southern flavors made with farm fresh ingredients. King of Pops has locations all over the Southeast including Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Charleston and Savannah.
Have a great July!
