After a late night and one too many drinks, most of us are used to the standard hangover cure: take two Advil and chug a bottle of water before bed. But these days you can actually be a little more scientific and exacting about feeling better by taking advantage of IV hydration. (A nurse hooks you up to an IV filled with vitamins to immediately get you back to feeling like yourself.) The technique once reserved for celebrities and athletes is becoming more and more mainstream, and it is one of the most requested services at a luxurious new med spa in SouthPark.

JoBrent Austin-Diehl opened Infinity MedSpa + Wellness in September of 2016. The 5,000-square-foot space has seven treatment rooms offering everything from facials and waxing, to botox, hormone treatment and even help for men and women who have trouble achieving orgasms.

A former environmental lobbyist, JoBrent at first seems an unlikely candidate to open and run a spa, but in fact she’s been working her way up to this for years. She says it all started to take shape after she was laid off from her job in 2012.

“After I lost my job I was Barbie on a budget. I was obsessed with skincare, researching everything, and I approached my aesthetician and said if I get a group of girls together would you give us a deal? And so I got my skincare for free.”

The 46-year-old started hosting monthly parties at her Myers Park home with just a small group of girls. But five quickly grew to 35, and she realized she was on to something.

“They always say you should do something you love, and I wanted to make money doing something I was interested in.”

She set to work finding the best of the best in Charlotte, hiring some of the most well-known and established wellness experts in the area. Then she built a luxurious spa in the middle of SouthPark and managed to make it feel like a hidden gem.

“I think it’s beautiful and fancy and still warm and inviting,” says Carmen Johnson, a new client.

Tucked away in a quiet shopping center, customers feel like it’s far off the beaten path – when Infinity is actually just across the street from the mall. There are the typical spa services: facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning. (SB TIP: The spa offers skincare clubs for both teens and adults, offering a deep discount if you buy a series of treatments.) There are also specialty lasers and injectables, and an entire room dedicated to the popular IV hydration treatments.

“When it comes to IV hydration, hangovers are the No. 1 thing people think of, but it’s also good for fatigue (for athletes before and after a competition or a race), and it’s also great for a traveler before you get on a plane if you want to build up your immune system,” JoBrent explains. She says the treatments are the quickest way to deliver fluids, vitamins and other vital nutrients directly into the bloodstream for maximum absorption. And if that sounds technical, don’t worry, they’ve come up with fun names for the different options.

For $169 you can get the “Panther Potion” designed for athletes and fitness buffs, and it’s designed to help you bounce back after a particularly tough workout.

The “Hornet’s Hangover” costs a little less at $119, and it’s said to be for weekend warriors and dancing queens. Hard partiers will be helped by a host of B-complex vitamins and medications that attack nausea, acid reflux/heartburn and that pounding headache that won’t go away.

There’s also a “Wheels Up” cocktail for the frequent traveler, the “Checkers Cocktail” for wellness, “A Knight on the Town,” and the “UltraLean Shot” (an amped up B12 shot).

SB TIP: IV hydration is by appointment only, and while the rest of the spa is closed on the weekends, IV hydration is available if you call ahead.

The services that get the most people talking? The so-called O-Shot and the P-Shot. Dr. Kathleen Russo of Carolina HealthSpan Institute also serves as the medical director at Infinity and specializes in these shots that are meant to boost your sex drive.

The O-Shot is a nonsurgical procedure designed to stimulate vaginal and clitoral rejuvenation to decrease urinary stress incontinence and help with orgasms. The P-Shot offers similar relief to men, using what’s called Platelet Rich Plasma therapy (PRP) to separate the healing or “growth factors” in your blood from the blood cells, and then re-inject the plasma back into your body. This shot is a nonsurgical way to help improve the circulation of the penis.

“I just want to help men and women look and feel their best,” JoBrent says. “What you see on the outside challenges you on the inside. If you’re feeling old and frumpy, that’s what tends to come out in your personality. Running the spa has been very rewarding — I feel like we’re actually changing lives. I watch people come out and they look like a natural, well-rested version of themselves.”
