In the December edition of our fashion advice column “Ask Megan,” Style Coach Megan LaRussa Chenoweth of Megan LaRussa tackles readers’ questions about wearing leather pants, tights versus hose, oversized men’s watches and more!
I desperately want to wear leather pants again. I had several pairs in college and unfortunately let them go when the trend passed. I’m 36 and don’t consider myself edgy. How do I pull this off? Leggings or pants? Texture? Also, I don’t wear heels, so what should I wear?
How fun! Love that you are up for rocking this winter look again. For 2017-2018, leather pants come in two main forms. The first one is a pair of coated denim. Coated denim creates the look of leather without the price. Most denim brands are making coated jeans, as it’s a very ‘in’ look for both dressy and casual. The second option is an actual pair of leather pants, but they need to be a modern cut and fit. I would recommend looking for a pair with some stretch and give to ensure a flattering, non-boxy fit. I would also suggest a pair that is a true pant, not a legging, so you can wear a wider array of tops — which also makes for a smarter investment (think: cost per wear).
Now, for a casual look, leather pants and coated denim both look fantastic with other textured items. A flattering, cozy sweater and a chambray button down are two great top options. Complete your casual leather look with a pair of stylish sneakers, ankle booties or a winter weather flat, like a closed-toe mule, loafer or ballet flat. Avoid pairing tall boots over leather pants as that will hide the beautiful texture of the pant and can create an overdone look.
To dress it up, pair it with a silk blouse and a heel. If you’re not a heel person, then select a dressy, pointed-toe ballet flat or a dressier black bootie, preferably in a similar hue to your pants to create an elongated look.

I was recently invited to a holiday party and the attire is “festive casual.” What exactly does that mean? Any wardrobe suggestions?
The best way to explain festive casual is dressy casual with a festive twist! Dressy casual winter outfits are often composed of nicer denim, a silk blouse, a dressier bootie, a sweater dress, an envelope clutch and other comparable items. And it’s the holidays, so festive attire is a must! A festive twist can include a beautiful color, like rich red, emerald green or snow white. It can also include a luxurious, winter fabric such as velvet, fur or cashmere. Keep in mind that a festive-casual party typically takes place at someone’s home, a more casual restaurant or a laid-back bar or venue, therefore your ensemble should reflect the location. Happy holidays!
Share with us your feelings about women wearing men’s oversized watches. How big is too big? If a woman is wearing a men’s sport-size watch — like a Rolex Submariner (38-40mm) — is she trying too hard? Should the size stay below 38mm?
There’s nothing I love more than ‘high-low’ dressing! This style term simply means that you are pairing two seemingly juxtaposing items together for a more effortlessly chic look. When sporting an oversized menswear watch, pair it with more feminine items, such as a silk blouse or a shirtdress. Allow for that contrast in a chic Parisian way. If you’re looking for a style icon to model the perfect pairing of masculine-meets-feminine style, simply Google or Pinterest search “Ines de La Fressange.”
As for size, proportion and scale are everything when it comes to accessories. If you are a taller woman, then go for the larger watch! If you are a more petite woman, then the men’s oversized watch will wear you. Instead opt for a smaller watch face but one with more masculine details to achieve a comparable look. And remember this rule holds true for all accessories, not just watches.
I love wearing dresses and skirts with boots in the winter. Are hose a “no-no”? And how do I best wear tights as far as color and texture?
This is one of the most popular wintertime questions I get from my VIP clients and SYC Society community, so you’re not alone in wondering about hose and tights. First and foremost, hose are no longer in style — they are the quickest way to date your dress or skirt outfit. For my clients that toss their hose but still want some color on their legs, I recommend a great sunless tanner or daily bronzing lotion. Numerous skincare brands make great ones now without odor or streakiness.
If you need some warmth on your legs, then opt for opaque tights instead of hose. The most classic, basic style of tights would be black without any texture. We’re also seeing more fun tights this season with great texture, like Swiss dot, tasteful fishnet and even geometric designs. These on-trend tights are best worn in a social setting or a creative work environment. All in all, nix the brown, light gray or burgundy tights, and stick to smooth or textured black and deep gray tones for a modern look.
