Although the summer solstice doesn’t officially occur until June 21st, the season’s high temperatures have already settled in throughout the South. As a personal stylist, I find that the change of each season is always punctuated by the shift in wardrobe and the decisions made while getting dressed. As we enter the particularly steamy months ahead, I thought it would be helpful to share some of the concepts that are top of mind when working with clients this time of year.

During the summer, there seem to be two overarching goals that come up time and time again — the first is dressing in the coolest way possible in terms of temperature. Let’s face it, no matter how beautiful an outfit may be, no one wants to sweat through their shirt or suffer through extra layers!

The second goal I often hear is the desire to achieve a “cool” look in the aesthetic sense of the word. This relates to an overall style that looks effortless and unfussy. It makes sense that we tend to crave this style; summer often brings packed schedules, so seeking some relief and simplicity in our wardrobe is only natural. Let’s look at some simple ways to look and feel like your coolest self all summer.

1. Focus on Fabrics

I often get asked what qualifies something as “in” or “out” of season. To this, I say not to worry about particular colors or even categories of items but rather consider the fabrication. Can you wear pastel blue in the middle of winter? Of course! Can booties be worn in the summer? Certainly! It’s really the material the items are made of that I’m more concerned about.

For example, velvets, corduroy, wool, and heavier fabrics are safe to stow away until autumn rolls back around. This is the time to pull out the linen, seersucker, eyelet, gauzy and lightweight blends! If you’re someone who tends toward thinking you’re not a summery dresser because you love a mostly black uniform, don’t fret. You can feel equally chic in the summer weight versions of your favorite black staples.

2. For the Love of Layering

Whether you’re styling an outfit, a vignette in your home, or a fabulous tablescape, adding layers is one of the key concepts for achieving an elevated look. When it comes to outfits, this can look like adding in a “third piece” to tie an ensemble together. But when the summer heat hits, the last thing you want to think about is layering on more clothing, right?

Rather than grabbing a jacket or something that adds unneeded bulk, I encourage you to expand your idea of what layers can look like. Sometimes the purpose of adding layers isn’t really about adding more pieces but instead adding visual interest or texture. Here are a few of my favorite examples of adding visual appeal through layering while keeping it as cool as possible:

  • When added coverage is desired, try using a light button-down instead of a jacket. A classic white button-down can often be swapped in where you might typically add a denim jacket or cardigan.

  • Add interest to a look by layering necklaces or stacking jewelry. Whether you have an open neckline or want to dress up a basic crew neck tee, a stack of layered necklaces can completely upgrade an outfit.
  • Layer in some texture with a woven hat or handbag. The natural finish of a straw hat or handbag is such a classic choice for summer dressing — not to mention an added functionality factor!

  • A lightweight scarf or twilly can be tied into a look in various ways while adding the perfect dose of color or pattern. Try different ways of tying one around your neck, on a handbag, or even as a hair accessory.

3. Contrast = Cool

A concept we discuss when styling looks for clients, regardless of the season, is the idea of contrast. When people show me inspirational pictures or saved Pinterest boards, there are often elements of an outfit they can’t quite put into words but know they like. Usually, a subtle touch of contrast results in an overall “effortless” vibe or “je ne sais quoi.” To add contrast to an outfit, consider incorporating two things that feel like they’re on opposite ends of the spectrum. For example, you might pair distressed, light-washed denim with something that feels ultra-polished, such as a pair of pumps or a blazer. Another example is pairing a monochromatic white ensemble with an electric pop-of-color accessory.

4. Shoes Should Be Versatile!

Without the right assortment of shoes, outfit combinations become limited.

Reevaluating your shoe collection at the start of every season is something I recommend to everyone! Shoes naturally take on a lot of wear and tear, so there may be a few well-loved pairs from last year that simply need to be replaced. You might also benefit from the addition of a new style that offers more versatility. Of course, everyone’s needs and preferences are different, but here are three styles I’ve been shopping for over and over again this season for clients across the board:

Fashion Sneakers

At this point, it’s clear that fashion sneakers offer versatility. I find this is a great category for adding variety! If you’ve been getting a ton of use out of your neutral pair of sneakers, it may be time to add another pair in a different style or colorway.

Tip: Try adding these Flatsocks to your sneakers (I also use them in loafers and boots/booties). They help eliminate sweat in your shoes while giving a little extra support!

Casual Sandals

Do you have a bin of worn-down flip-flops and ultra-flat sandals that could stand an upgrade? An elevated, casual sandal may be just what your wardrobe needs. I love something with a slightly thicker (or even platform) insole for plenty of support while walking on hot surfaces all summer long.

Nude Block Heels or Wedges

When was the last time you replaced your go-to dressy wedge or block heels? (You know the pair — they’ve served you well at nearly every patio party or outdoor wedding.) Perhaps you have a collection of sky-high stilettos that have become more like museum pieces than versatile footwear. Either way (and even if you only wear heels on occasion), having one updated and comfortable pair of nude block heels or wedges can fill that void!
