To kick off the fashion component of our “Diaries” series, we tapped frequent StyleBlueprint fashion contributor Megan LaRussa to get an idea of what looks she sports throughout the week and the activities she’s dressing for. Find some inspiring style ideas, get to know a new brand or two, and enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at how a style coach selects her daily wardrobe for a week.
Fashion Diaries: A Week in the Life of Megan LaRussa
When it comes to clothes, I have to admit I have a blazer obsession. There’s nothing that makes me feel more confident than a nicely made, tailored third piece. I actually have this hot pink blazer by a French brand, Iro, in three colors. It’s effortlessly tailored but is also a knit, so it’s comfortable for a day of working with my Style Coaching clients. I love pairing it with a tee, a sleeveless top or, on a chilly spring day, a long-sleeved silk blouse like this paisley one I’m wearing today. Dark wash, frayed hem jeans and studded mules complete my look for a day in my office assessing online shopping finds with clients.
Today I’m doing a closet cleanse for a Style Coaching client, so comfort is a must. Actually, comfort is super important to me pretty much every workday as I can be carrying clothes through a department store, sitting on the floor cleaning out a closet, walking and walking around a mall, or driving to see clients both near and far. I love a dress, especially during the spring and summer, and this one by Club Monaco is basically sweatshirt material. Despite being a cozy, comfy material, the dress still has a nice shape to it, which is also important. Since my casual dresses don’t always look right with a blazer, I love a square silk scarf to add that third piece. This fun vintage scarf has fancy ladies walking dogs on it.
My favorite midday lunch or tea break spot is Continental Bakery in Mountain Brook. It’s an adorable French bakery that’s right down the street from my office. I love popping in for a tea and to check my email between client appointments as the decor literally transports you to Europe. Today I opted for a feminine yet bohemian skirt I found recently when traveling to Costa Rica. I love pairing an easy, breezy skirt with a tailored white tee and a denim jacket. It feels pulled together, yet still casual for my work environment. And 99.9% of the time I wear flats for work, so today I threw on a new favorite pair of metallic mules that pick up the metallic thread woven through my skirt.
In addition to my blazer obsession, I also love love love denim! I wear jeans 4-5 days a week, so I love variety when it comes to my denim. I enjoy colored, textured and printed, but my favorite would have to be distressed. I often see with my Style Coaching clients that distressed denim is not for everyone, but I just love it. It’s so easy to throw on with a great tee and a cool third piece, and out the door you go! This springtime leather jacket by Rebecca Minkoff is so fun with the small flowers painted all over it. I often complete my outfits with a pair of lace up sneakers, like these by Golden Goose (they are like my animal print ones from Tuesday), as they’re perfect for walking around all of the shops in town.
It’s Friday, and that often means date night with my husband! A jumpsuit is such a wonderful wardrobe go-to as it’s literally one and done. Red is one of my favorite colors because of my skin tone, so when I found this one at Zara, I had to snag it. I’ve found it can be dressed up or down, and tonight I’m dressing it up with statement earrings and a pair of silver stacked-heel sandals. My Lucite monogrammed clutch it super fun, too. This picture makes me laugh because our cute fur babies, Katie and Carly, are clearly trying to sneak out and join us on our date!
And there you have it! How a style coach dresses — and the brands she buys and sites she shops from.
