Today’s story is by our fabulous summer intern, Elizabeth Forestner. She’s been digging into the Atlanta style scene for us and we love her discoveries.

Elizabeth:

We all know that washing our hair everyday, all summer long, damages the locks. This is certainly tough to avoid. Heat and humidity, sweat and sand, pools and ponds all wreak havoc on tresses during these hot months. It seems that regardless of effort, summer hair can often be flat and lifeless after just one day, where in cooler weather a blowout has longer life. StyleBlueprint reached out to the pros at Van Michael for tips to solve this predicament. (And as an extra treat, we have a few summer makeup tips to share, as well!)

Hairstyles to Try This Summer:

Talented stylist Loreen Dorchester created a series of styles transitioning easily from first day beach waves to a second day messy-chic pony and on to a twisted chignon.

Style #1: Beach Waves

A quick spray of any hairspray onto dry hair helps prep for styling. Clip hair into sections to make for a simple approach. Use a wide barrel curing iron held vertically to curl sections into loose ringlets. Finger comb through ringlets to form beachy waves.

Easy, beachy waves only get better with humidity!

Style #2: Tousled Pony

Starting at the temple, twist hair along each side, rolling back over the ear to the nape of the neck. Gather the bottom of each side twist into an low ponytail at the nape. Push fingers under and through the hair just above the ponytail elastic to create a pocket of space. Flip the ponytail up and pull it though the space.

Just a few twists and turns bring listless locks back to life. (Follow the steps from right to left on top row, then right to left on bottom row.)

Soft and feminine, this twisted ponytail shows off sun-kissed tresses.

Style #3: Twist It Up

Take the loose end of the tousled pony and twirl it upward. Secure ends into the base of the twists created from Style #2 using hair pins. Hairspray lightly to hold.

Take that twisted ponytail to the next step of sophistication but pinning up the bottom into a cool chignon.

Summer Makeup Tips:

Van Michael makeup artist Heather Vasquez applied light makeup to complement the look. Her summer tips:

  • Keep face simple and lips light. Focus on the eyes.
  • Use primer or concealer under eyeshadow
  • Press shadow onto eyelid instead of brushing to create longer staying power
  • Swipe mascara under and above lashes for full coverage.
No need to pile on layers of makeup. Let your glow show, accenting the eyes.

Simple to master and flattering to anyone, these options spike a style factor as high as the temps. As a bonus, the frizz from Atlanta heat only adds to the cool quotient. Take a turn trying this triple play for a summer style grand slam!
