Philomena Parker knows a thing or two … or twenty … about finding the best of each runway season. A sales associate and stylist for Jeffrey Atlanta for 18 years, Philomena’s an expert at spotting just the right thing for her clients. She understands how to incorporate trends into any wardrobe and quiet some of the noise generated by fashion media. Philomena eschews overdoing it on the fads, “I always say that I don’t like trends, but I guess we all follow them a little … in every aspect of life, not just fashion.” She advises, “Use those newer items to make your closet modern and current, to freshen everything up a bit.” She showed us some of the looks that she sees translating seamlessly from the catwalk to the sidewalk. Here’s what I learned when I visited with her recently in the store:

Shoes

The nostalgic 80’s wave continues through spring, showing up in footwear in a big way. Fashion sneakers are back in every possible iteration — wedges, hi-tops, low-tops, loafers, glitter, and floral. Sporty sandals also slide back into vogue, re-imagining the Birkenstock influence in printed and patent leather, suedes, or metallics.

Bags

Great bags keep turning up as the accessory of the moment. Fringe, animal prints, bright pops of color, many of these bags convert between clutches or handles to cross-body styling. Philomena said they can barely keep the wildly popular mini-bags in the store.

 Pleated Skirts

Graceful pleated skirts create a flirty and feminine silhouette any time of year. This fashion classic twirls back onto the scene this spring. Choose from knife or box pleats, in twills, linens, silks, and knits.

Pull-On Pants

Comfortable, pull-on pants might receive a round of applause from fashionistas ready to exhale after seasons of super-skinny cuts. The relaxed, casual fit takes full advantage of the drape in gorgeous fabrics and shows off details in cheery prints.

Structured Cropped Tops

Simple, sculpted lines seem to be the key to this trend. The slightly boxy shape echoes the ladylike retro feel we’ve all celebrated for a few seasons. Don’t fret about showing too much skin, it’s just a hint and pairing these with one of those pleated skirts or pants with a slightly higher waist will help keep it classy.

Statement Necklaces

We’re all thrilled to know that our statement necklaces will be sticking around for awhile. Designers and stylists alike continue to appreciate the way one great piece pulls an outfit together. Balance out large or complex eye-catchers with a crisp white blouse or simple t-shirt.

Philomena encourages all her clients to start with the pieces they already have and love, then build a little each season. Fashion really should be easy and fun, not stressful. While Jeffrey is known for drool-worthy, high-end iconic labels, feel free to take these same ideas and interpret them to suit your taste — whatever your budget. Establishing your own personal style means understanding what works for your body and your life, and embracing what makes you feel confident. This spring, add something different to your look and enjoying mixing it all up!
