Our latest diary comes from Leigh Hearne Hillenmeyer, a wife, mother, designer and small business owner who has dedicated her handcrafted jewelry business, Hearne Dry Goods Co., to giving back — not only to those who wear her pieces but to those who live thousands of miles away as a portion of all proceeds support a community health clinic in Lwala, Kenya. Here’s a peek into her world.

Leigh Hearne Hillenmeyer is a wife, mother, designer and owner of Hearne Dry Goods Co.

6 a.m. — Usually I have some dream about a new necklace or piece of jewelry, so I wake up before the rest of the house. I sit in my favorite robe with coffee from my Keurig with my favorite creamer. Then I do a devotional from Jesus Calling and have quiet prayer time.

7 a.m. — Kids up, fix breakfast and lunches. My husband fixes me my favorite breakfast smoothie — blueberries, strawberries, banana, almond butter, spinach, soy milk and cinnamon. I love to have a healthy breakfast before a long day of being creative and making new designs.

8 a.m. — My family all leaves for work and school. I usually have a few calls and emails for marketing and contact stores that are based all over the South — for our products and distribution. I love connecting with clients, too, to get the day started.

9 a.m. — I am a huge yoga fan; we even make our necklaces with yogi style in mind. I attend yoga class to get the creative juices flowing and for mind centering time. Or sometimes I do a Pure Barre class.

10:30 a.m. — This is when workshop hours stars. Sandi Schey and Hilary Wright arrive in the workshop to bead; glue; organize beads, supplies, and earring findings; fill orders; and find and collaborate inspiration.

Noon — Meet up with friend and stylist Ramsey Corn for fashion advice and closet consultations.

2 p.m. — Sometimes my day involves photoshoots with friends for a new line, or taking product placement photos in my workshop and out in the community. I also love to meet up with girlfriends for a hike at Percy Warner Park and maybe a have juice after if I have time. I constantly snack on peanut butter pretzels and always have 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day. Before I pick up the kids, I grocery shop at Kroger in Green Hills, which is near where I live, and I always get a soy latte from my buddy Jim at Starbucks. I love this hidden gem of a Starbucks in Kroger because there’s never a line!

Leigh is originally from Louisiana, and she now calls Nashville home. She’s pictured here in a Hearne Dry Goods Co. necklace.

3:30 p.m. — Pick up kids at the bus stop and take them to various activities while trying to NOT work and focus on them. It’s hard to balance work and life!

4:30 p.m. — Kids will bead in the workshop and join me in the creation process from time to time. They always ask to get paid for their time. :)

Evenings/weekends — Weekends are for family and friends. We have a family game night — the game of Life is our favorite to play. We may go out with friends to new restaurants or just play a round of golf and eat at the club. We may spend time with family and cousins. We have a big Hillenmeyer family in town.

Leigh Hearne Hillenmeyer is a Louisiana native who settled in Nashville, Tennessee. When she’s not busy working on the next season, Leigh loves to relax with a round of golf or a yoga class. If she’s not at home running her small business and taking care of her two kids, you might find her vacationing in the Bahamas or back home with family in Louisiana.
