With Father’s Day coming up on June 16th, I thought I’d tell you about J. Hilburn, a fabulous custom men’s direct sales clothier that provides fine quality menswear at affordable price points. Though we more often write about retailers geared towards us girls, when I found out that the co-founder of J. Hilburn, Hil Davis is from Birmingham, I had to share his story and find out for myself about his top notch luxury mens clothing.
I decided to throw my husband, John, under the bus and hire a consultant to find out all about J. Hilburn and experience (well, witness) the process for myself. After a few scheduling hitches, due to my husband’s inability to commit to a day and time, we finally had our fitting. Lois England, a local J. Hilburn consultant (and truth be told, a friend of mine!) arrived with her bag of tricks and went to work. First she had John bring down his favorite shirt and pair of pants so she could see what appealed to him.
Then she broke out her measuring tape and got down to business. J. Hilburn shirts are so custom tailored that they even accommodate for different arm lengths and wrist sizes, or for those who wear a watch and need more room in that cuff.
John selects his style from many custom options, like notched cuffs and collars with or without buttons and a multitude of fabric choices for his shirt and for his pants. Lois packs up, and the whole thing has taken about 40 minutes, start to finish.
Within two weeks, we receive notification that the shirt and pants have arrived and Lois schedules a time to deliver. The shirt comes wrapped in a beautiful box and bears John’s initials in lieu of a label, after all it is a custom creation.
Lois has John try on his new duds for his approval. The pants will need to be hemmed locally, but otherwise the fit is spot on! And now that his measurements are on file, any future orders can simply be placed online.
J. Hilburn delivers on their promise to provide high quality (the weight of the fabric and the workmanship rivals anything John has purchased at Neiman’s) at affordable prices (the shirt was $140 and the pants $180). Custom shirt pricing starts at $99 and pants at $125. They offer a full line of menswear, including shorts. Now, if only they would start making women’s clothes!
Custom-made menswear would make for a mighty fine Father’s Day gift. Don’t you think?
