Chevrons

August 1, 2011 by Heidi Potter

When I think of a chevron, I think of this:

This Chevron does not leave a smile on my face

Not of this:

Now this makes me smile.  By Elle Decor.

What is a chevron exactly?  Glad you asked.  I did a little homework and found that it has the shape of a V or an inverted V.  If someone is wearing a chevron, it usually indicates that person’s rank in the military–that doesn’t apply here.  Putting a chevron on your throw pillow doesn’t mean you stormed the beach at Normandy.  It’s just cute and meaningless.  But chevrons have been around since 1800 BC, so there were design savvy cavemen out there as well.

Simply stated, chevrons in design can add a simple, bold pattern to a neutral room.

I have to have this “ottoman pouf” just for the name “pouf” alone.  Available at Etsy.

That being said, I would not do the whole room in chevron.  Just a piece or two. Otherwise, you would feel the same sensation like in the olden days when someone had to get up and hit the top of the television to make the wiggly lines go away.  Okay, maybe that was just in my house.  But you know what I mean.  You could go cross-eyed with too much chevron.

But a punch or two, and its a perfect design statement.

I also like that it is neither feminine nor masculine: it remains gender-free, dependent on color choice.

West Elm chevron rugs

If your man balks at your floral or paisley bedspread, this would be a pattern that both of you could love.

Great pillow options if you cannot do floral or paisley.  This is from Etsy.

If you cannot commit to something as big as a pillow, try some chevron knick knack paddywhacks first.  Ease into it.  All of the accessories below are from Etsy.

Cross-eyed yet?

Like I said, everything moderation.  This is a great, simple yet, bold trend.  Don’t hit your computer or adjust the rabbit ears just yet!
