Mary Sibande: Blue Purple Red

October 8, 2021 @ 10:00 am - January 2, 2022 @ 5:30 pm

Varies

Using hyperrealistic sculptures and photographs, Johannesburg-based artist Mary Sibande deconstructs the roles of women in South Africa as both individuals and in terms of race, gender, and class inequity. Beginning Friday, October 8, her exhibit Blue Purple Red makes its way to the Frist Art Museum and shows her color palette transitioning from blue and white to purple and red, which symbolize the political awakening that came with the end of apartheid and the anger felt by South Africans at the ongoing conditions of poverty and inequity in their country. fristartmuseum.org
