October in the South can be tricky in regards to fashion. We expect cool, crisp autumn days but often are surprised by lingering summer heat and humidity. Mornings may call for long sleeves but by midday you’ll be sweating and uncomfortable. So it can be hard to know exactly what to wear, especially when you’ll be at an all-day event. To help with this dilemma, we dropped into three local boutiques to put together several outfits that will keep you comfortable yet fashionable at three top upcoming events that we’re really excited about.
SB Tip: We’ve learned layering is the key to staying comfortable all day long. Packing a lightweight jacket, sweater or scarf that can easily be thrown on when temperatures drop is an easy option. Take a look!
The Event: South End Wine Festival
- October 15, 2016
- 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Tickets: $35
We can’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday than sipping wine for a good cause! Guests can enjoy tastings from more than 25 different wineries at the second annual South End Wine Festival. Along with plenty of wine, there also will be plenty of live music and popular food trucks to grab a bite to eat. Proceeds benefit Classroom Central, a local charity that provides much needed school supplies for children in need. For more information, visit southendwinefest.org.
What to wear: The South End Wine Festival is a great place to socialize and enjoy wines from all over the world. The event is pretty casual, so you can throw on a simple shift dress or a t-shirt and pair of jeans and you will fit right in. Don’t forget our tip about layering — bring along something you can toss on in case temperatures do fluctuate. You will do a lot of walking and standing, so you’ll want to wear comfortable shoes. Each of our outfits below can be paired with your favorite pair of flats, booties or riding boots.
The Event: Carolina Balloon Festival
- October 21 – 23, 2016
- Friday, 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Sunday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Tickets: Vary depending on day
The Carolina Balloon Festival is one of the most fun and unique events you can attend in North Carolina. It’s absolutely incredible to watch dozens of balloons take off during the early morning hours and then light up at dusk during Saturday’s famous Balloon Glow. Make sure you pack your camera because you’ll want to take plenty of pictures! The three-day festival is great for all ages and there are plenty of activities between balloon launches to enjoy, including wine-tastings, arts and crafts and carnival rides. For tickets and the entire festival schedule, visit carolinaballoonfest.com.
What to wear: Since the Carolina Balloon Festival spans over three days and each of those days are lengthy, it’s best to wear an outfit that you’ll be super comfortable in all day. We suggest wearing jeans or a dress with leggings underneath. Wear a jacket, scarf and closed-toe shoes if you plan to attend the morning balloon launch, as it gets frosty out there! By lunch, temps will be much more comfortable. Pack a stylish hat to protect your face from sun damage. (You’ll thank us later!) This event also involves a lot of walking, so make sure you’ve got good shoes on.
