Perhaps one of the coolest things about Charlotte is that each one of our neighborhoods has its own story to tell. Every neighborhood is filled with its own charm, successful businesses, delicious restaurants and local watering holes — its own unique personality that reflects those who live there and the businesses that operate there.
Plaza Midwood, an eclectic and funky neighborhood about one mile northeast of Uptown, is a favorite destination for many Charlotteans — so much so that it seems every six months another apartment building appears on Central Avenue.
Despite the upsurge of new apartment buildings popping up, Plaza Midwood has maintained its M.O. of being inclusive, socially minded, fun and historic. We love Plaza Midwood for all it has to offer, and to make things easier for you, we’ve created a guide to show you just what to do and where to go!
WHERE TO EAT
As open and self-proclaimed foodies, we’ll start with our favorite thing: where to eat. If we took the time to list every single restaurant in Plaza Midwood, you would be reading a novel, so we’ll stick with our go-to spots.
2007 Commonwealth Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205 • (704) 334-6209
Hours: Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to midnight
Open since 2002, Common Market became the go-to destination for anybody and everybody. Known for their deli-style cuisine, beer and wine selection and, of course, their coffee, Common Market is open 365 days a year and should be at the top of your list next time you need a quick breakfast or lunch!
SB TIP: Take advantage of their coffee from local roasters like Magnolia Coffee.
1220 Thomas Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205 • (704) 344-0343
Hours: Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Closed Sunday
Walking into Dish is like walking into your grandma’s house — it’s warm and homey with all your favorite foods. Dish is a purveyor of Southern favorites like deviled eggs, chicken and dumplings, shrimp and grits and country fried steak. The best part? It offers an unpretentious environment with amazing food that won’t break the bank.
SB TIP: Order the fried green tomatoes as a starter.
1601 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205 • (704) 332-3663
Hours: Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Zada Jane’s is definitely a Charlotte favorite. When you show up, especially if it’s the weekend, expect to see a line out the door. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, but if we had to recommend one, we’d say go for breakfast (which they serve all day). The atmosphere is funky and fun (much like Plaza Midwood itself) with local art adorning the walls, bright colors and quirky coffee mugs filled with anything from their specialty coffee menu or an Irish coffee from the bar if you’re feeling it (but only after 11 a.m.). “My favorite thing about this neighborhood is how each owner and business operator gets along so well — I feel like we really look out for each other,” says Zada Janes’ owner, Marcia Hurst. Now, that’s the positivity we like to hear!
SB TIP: Order the bunny rancheros with extra tortillas.
1901 Commonwealth Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205 • (704) 375-8959
Hours: Sunday through Thursday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday & Saturday: 11 a.m. to 4 a.m.
When we’re looking for a place for a big juicy burger or hot dog, The Diamond is where we go. The food is delicious and the prices are phenomenal. Where else can you get a side of hushpuppies for only $1.75 or a small burger for under $6?! Whatever you order make sure you leave room for dessert, because their menu boasts Southern favorites like banana pudding, peach cobbler and apple pie. We also really like sitting on their patio when it’s nice outside.
1401 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205 • (704) 295-4227
Hours: Sunday through Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Midwood Smokehouse is a Charlotte favorite when it comes to BBQ. Lovers of Midwood Smokehouse swear by their brisket and pulled pork. Even better, they have multiple sauces for you to choose from — whether you’re Eastern Carolina or South Carolina, they’ve got something to satisfy those taste buds. Other popular items on the menu include their queso appetizer, mac and cheese and tacos. Honestly, you can’t go wrong at Midwood; just be prepared to loosen your belt a bit as you leave.
SB TIP: Their Bloody Marys are to die for — trust us!
1500 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205 • (704) 348-1848

If you’re looking for a swanky spot for dinner and drinks, Soul Gastrolounge should be your first stop. From small plates to skewers and sushi to dips, Soul’s menu is packed with so many delicious choices for you to choose from. We love their tapas, like the lamb lollipops, the sashimi tuna tacos and the Dirty South Nachos. If you’re looking for a spot to grab some post-work drinks, a date spot or your next stop for girls’ night out, we totally recommend Soul.
SB TIP: They have seasonal Moscow mules on tap.

Hours: Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.
One of the new kids on the block, The Workman’s Friend is Plaza Midwood’s own Irish pub. Apart from their awesome environment (two fireplaces — one in, one out — and a perfect outdoor patio), they have amazing drinks (including a killer Irish coffee) and the best fish and chips. Between the pub atmosphere, delish drinks and authentic food, The Workman’s Friend is definitely worth checking out.
SB TIP: Even if it’s a little gloomy out, the outdoor fireplace is under a semi-covered patio and goes great with an Irish coffee.
WHERE TO DRINK
From coffeehouses to breweries, Plaza Midwood has you covered on the beverage front. Here are some of our favorite places to grab drinks!

Okay, so Central Coffee isn’t a drinking place, but their coffee is amazing, so we had to include them! The staff is super friendly, the baked goods are delish and the coffee is flavorful and fresh.
SB TIP: Central Coffee has a frequent buyers program — with every 10 drinks purchased you get a free one. Totally worth it!

Since its recent opening in Plaza Midwood, Legion Brewing has become a popular watering hole in the neighborhood. No matter which beer you try, we’re sure you’ll find one you love because they’re all delicious. If you want to try several, we recommend doing a flight. Apart from their expansive patio and selection of board games, Legion also has trivia nights on Tuesdays and a run club that happens every Thursday night. “We hope that having a brewery here in Plaza Midwood creates a grounding point to attract people to this neighborhood. It is great to see folks stop into Legion for a beer and then proceed to one of the restaurants in the neighborhood,” says Legion Brewing owner, Phil Buchy. “At other times, we benefit when restaurant patrons head to Legion after they dine, perhaps to enjoy some live music with friends.” Whether it be your starting point before a night out, or your end game after dinner, stop by Legion and grab a cold beverage.
SB TIP: Ask your bartender to add the blackberry syrup to your Carolina Sparkle Party.
