It’s not often you hear women boasting about being able to get a pap smear, a cooking class and acupuncture all under one roof. But that’s exactly what you get at Thrive Center for Personalized Healthcare & Wellness. The concept is designed as an all-encompassing wellness facility that looks at treating every aspect of a patient’s health and well-being.
Tucked away in the back of one of the most popular shopping centers in South Park (the Specialty Shops of South Park), Thrive took over the old Charles Grayson spa behind Bricktop’s in June. The 9,000-square-foot space is home to three physicians, a workout studio and more than 30 additional wellness professionals.
Amy Fletcher is one of the doctors and co-owners. She explains, “Our whole philosophy is that we want to look at the whole patient — mind, body and spirit — and that includes more than just a 7-minute visit with a doctor. We wanted to offer everything we could for a patient’s whole health.”
Amy is joined by Dr. Nancy Pallermo Lietz (also an owner) and Dr. Tracy Larson. In addition, the team also includes a chiropractor, an acupuncturist, a massage therapist, facialist, a nutrition specialist, fitness instructors and more. And with the exception of a male acupuncturist, the entire staff is composed of women.
“We wanted everything under one roof — that, we feel, is critical to health in general,” Amy says.
The women say the center was born out of frustration after they found they couldn’t truly give their patients all the help they needed in the more traditional medical practices they left behind.
The three women are among the most well-known and well-respected OB/GYN’s in Charlotte. Now, though, they no longer deliver babies, instead focusing on gynecology and women’s health issues at Thrive.
“This is a different way to approach healthcare and wellness. We’re innovating a whole new approach,” Amy explains. And their patients couldn’t be happier.
“Medical schools don’t seem to be teaching important concepts such as nutrition, exercise and finding the root cause of diseases,” says patient Maria Senkel, 53. “Such powerful concepts get overlooked. After doing plenty of research, I decided that there was indeed a better way of approaching health. That is why I chose Thrive, because it has doctors who are willing to work with me, who are looking to find the root cause of disease, who understand that health is about the whole person, not an individual organ, and most importantly, because they are trained to think differently. Their approach to health is the future of medicine as far as I am concerned.”
Mara Purcell, a longtime patient of Dr. Pallermo’s, says, “I have been incredibly grateful to experience all of the programs and benefits firsthand. Not only are the physicians and staff top-notch, providing a personalized and integrative approach, but they have provided me with invaluable information about functional medicine, health and nutrition, and stress management to name a few, and they have provided lots of great recipes and samples to enjoy.”
That’s because the center even has a test kitchen!
The upstairs is home to the doctor’s offices, while downstairs houses the fitness studio, kitchen and other functional spaces.
Amy says there is nothing else like Thrive anywhere in the South. They modeled the practice like others they’d seen in New York and on the west coast.
“The current healthcare model is not helping people get better. Chronic disease is crippling the country, and for people who want to take a proactive and comprehensive approach, we wanted to be the place they could come,” Amy says.
Having created a practice outside the norm, they’re also not dealing with insurance companies. That means all patients pay for everything up front and out of pocket, and they can file for insurance but may not be reimbursed. The doctors say their services are priced about 30 to 40 percent lower right out of the gate because they don’t have as much overhead as other medical practices. And they think they’re worth it, offering patients a minimum appointment of 30 to 45 minutes with a doctor and a very personalized experience.
They also offer a number of seminars free to the public on everything from stress management to sleeping habits and nutrition.
Amy says, “We are trying to fight chronic disease by having everything that is critical to health in general under one roof.” Pap smears and all.
