Charlotte’s gourmet grocery and specialty market scene is thriving, and we’re thrilled because they offer a nice change of pace from the typical chain supermarket. You can often stumble upon everything from hard-to-find items and seriously delicious sweets to extremely fresh produce and unbelievably good coffee.
We love supporting these local markets and know you will too! Here are four of our favorite spots to shop.
1500 W. Morehead St., Charlotte NC 28208 • (704) 348-1428
Hours: Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday & Saturday, 7 a.m. to midnight; Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Rhino Market and Deli has been an amazing addition to the Wesley Heights area of Charlotte. It’s got a laid back vibe that suits the neighborhood perfectly and lots of delicious food and local speciality items from which to choose. Rhino’s staff has some of the nicest people you’ll meet — always glad to help and show you what’s new in the store. You can drop in for a quick snack, soup, sandwich or salads — they even have an entire section on the menu dedicated to vegetarians! When it comes to Rhino’s wine selection, it’s pretty impressive, and there’s also plenty of local craft beer to choose from and take home. Plus, they’ve got beer on tap for tastings, and the selections are always changing, so it’s always fun to stop in and see what they have. We’ve also been known to schedule work meetings there because the snickerdoodle coffee is addicting. When the weather is warm it’s a lot of fun to sit out on the side patio and listen to live bands on Saturday nights.
1609 Elizabeth Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204 • (704) 333-2757
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
We love Earl’s Grocery for so many things but especially for their baked goods and brunch! Our favorite thing to do on a Sunday is go to Earl’s and order a pimento cheese biscuit, a bottle of champagne and sit at one of their sidewalk tables with friends while soaking in the sun and watching the day go by. The grocery is in the heart of the QC’s Elizabeth neighborhood, so it’s always bustling, which is always a good sign of a great place to eat. We’re impressed with the pricing too — there’s only one item on the typical breakfast menu that’s over $6, and lunch and dinner meals are less than $10 (browse the menu here). Both the deli counter and cheese selection are rather impressive, and you can also pick up specialty grits, sauces and cocktail tonics. Every time we go into Earl’s there’s something new to discover.
SB FAVORITES: Other than the pimento cheese biscuit and champagne? The Oreo cheesecake! We also love that they carry Seattle Chocolates Birthday Cake Batter Bar.
4331 Barclay Downs Drive, Charlotte, NC 28209 • (704) 377-7686
2823 Selwyn Ave., Charlotte, NC 28209 • (704) 377-1312
Hours at both locations: Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Reid’s Fine Foods has been a Charlotte staple since its opening in 1928. From the deli counter, where you can build your own sandwich to its full-service restaurant, Reid’s always goes above and beyond when it comes to customer service and providing quality goods. You can nosh on small plates like fried oysters, truffle fries or Maryland-style seafood dip, while dinner plates range from crab-stuffed flounder to a beef brisket sandwich — YUM! For dessert make sure you swing by the bakery case where there’s never a shortage of tarts, macaroons, cakes and cookies. Need a caffeine fix? You can even find Cafe Du Monde’s famous coffee without having to go to the Big Easy! If you need something a little stronger, Reid’s has an incredible wine selection, with a wide range of choices from all over the world. We like sitting out on the expansive patio at the SouthPark location on Barclay Downs, especially on Wednesdays when wine is half-price by the glass! (The Selwyn location also has half-priced wine on Wednesdays.)
SB FAVORITES: The make-your-own roast beef sandwich on freshly made sourdough bread and a cheese plate to share with friends
224 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28202 • (704) 230-4346
Hours: Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Unlike the other places we’ve mentioned, 7th Street Public Market boasts several separate businesses and vendors all in one location in Uptown Charlotte. The market is dedicated to providing and promoting the best of local Charlotte — whether it’s a regional farmer’s produce, artisan’s work or baker’s sweet treats, they have it all. We love meandering through the market and seeing what new shops have popped up. If you’re looking for a place with lots of options, 7th Street is it! You can enjoy a French crêpe from Hazelnuts Creperie, then walk over to Local Loaf and grab a fresh loaf of bread to take home, and then pick up a gift for someone at Small Keys — all in one trip!
SB TIPS: Each month Orrman’s Cheese Shop and Assorted Table Wine Shoppe, which are both located in 7th Street, team up to host a wine and cheese tasting for $25. It’s a great way to get out and a try something new! Click here for the tasting schedule. Also, if you don’t live Uptown and hate looking for parking, consider riding the light rail.
