There’s nothing quite like autumn in Alabama. Leaves change, temperatures drop and a festive joy fills the air, signaling the arrival of November. As the seasons change, though, it can be difficult to find the right wardrobe essentials. So, with help from some local fashion experts, we’ve put together seven stylish looks for upcoming events: Moss Rock Festival, the Veterans Day Parade and The Hip Hop Nutcracker at the Alabama Theatre.
Set against the dreamy backdrop of The Donnelly House, Amy Thomas and Sally McKay of the Junior League of Birmingham model looks from local boutiques Wrapsody and Town and Country Clothes. Sally is the chair of this year’s Market Noel, the Magic City’s favorite annual holiday shopping event featuring over 100 exclusive merchants and a weekend of exciting events. Knock out all your holiday shopping in one weekend and look great throughout the holiday season with these seven styles!
The Event: Moss Rock Festival
- November 4 & 5, 2017
- Festival begins at 10 a.m. each day.
- Tickets are $7 for adults ($10 for the weekend), $5 for seniors and students, and free for children under 15.
- For more information, visit mossrockfestival.com.
An annual favorite, the Moss Rock Festival is back again for another weekend inspired by nature, smart living, art and design. This year’s event will feature hundreds of artists and makers, live music acts, food vendors, a beer garden, a kids’ zone and more. With over 12,000 attendees at last year’s festival, this is sure to be a memorable weekend spent exploring nature and “eco-creative” activities with the entire community!
What to Wear: Bohemian-inspired fashion is always appropriate for an outdoor festival, especially one focused on “eco-friendly smart living” themes. We love the style of a breezy jumpsuit paired with neutral booties, but if boho fashion isn’t your cup of tea, we suggest a statement jacket, like this fringe one, paired with comfortable denim for a fashionable and sophisticated look.
The Event: Veterans Day Parade
- November 11, 2017
- Parade begins at 1:30 p.m.
- Attendance is free.
- For more information, visit nationalveteransday.org.
Did you know that Veterans Day, as we know it, was born in Birmingham? In 1947, a World War II veteran and Birminghamian named Raymond Weeks led the first National Veterans Day Parade in 1947 in Alabama, as well as a delegation to D.C. urging the creation of a national holiday that honored all veterans. Mr. Raymond Weeks got his wish in 1954, when President Eisenhower signed legislation making Veterans Day a national holiday, and President Reagan later awarded Weeks the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 at the White House. So, there’s truly no better way to celebrate Veterans Day than the 2017 Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Birmingham! Support the men and women who serve and protect our nation by lining the sidewalks on November 11 for a fantastic parade, followed by a festive fireworks show at Vulcan. This is the perfect event for the whole family to salute our Veterans!
What to Wear: Comfort is key for this event. We suggest a cute graphic tee paired with a duster cardigan and jeans or dark denim, and a long-sleeve blouse to ensure warmth and fashion-forward style.
- November 27, 2017
- 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
- Tickets are $23.
- For more information, visit alabamatheatre.com.
Staged at the historic Alabama Theatre, The Hip Hop Nutcracker turns the beloved Christmas story into an innovative and entertaining music- and dance-filled performance. Try something new this season — this hip-hop twist on a traditional tale of a young girl’s epic dream-journey to a candy-filled wonderland with her prince will definitely get you in the holiday spirit!
What to Wear: The Alabama Theatre, in its regal reds and ornate gold interiors, is magical during the holidays. Celebrate an evening at the theatre in something beautiful! We love pairing a festive top with on-trend wide-leg trousers or exploring the crushed-velvet trend with a flattering jumpsuit in a deep hue. And you really can never go wrong with a classic and timeless black blouse and skirt pairing.
Have fun — and look stylish — this November!
