As spring awakens local blossoms and sunnier days, events in Birmingham are happening everywhere! So, for this edition of What to Wear, we’ve partnered up with two of our favorite local boutiques, Alabama Outdoors and Elle, as well as one brand-new Homewood boutique, The Moody Rabbit, to create nine stylish looks for three exciting upcoming events: Taste of Homewood, Live at the Lyric: Graham Nash and Children’s of Alabama’s Children’s Table.
Today’s talented and impressive models are three Birmingham businesswomen who are making their mark on the Magic City. Liz Willis Cook works as a Community Partnership Specialist at the ever-popular grocery delivery service, Shipt, where she coordinates all of Shipt’s corporate giving to local nonprofit organizations. Sarah Merkle is a litigator and one of only five lawyers worldwide that is a Certified Professional Parliamentarian-Teacher (CPP-T) and Professional Registered Parliamentarian (PRP). She is an Associate with one of the most well-respected law firms in the country, Bradley. New York University grad Grace Harrelson is in Business Development for one of the nation’s leading construction firms, Brasfield & Gorrie, where she works with leadership on the firm’s long-term, strategic planning around the culture and infrastructure of the company’s twelve offices.
Shipt, Bradley and Brasfield & Gorrie, along with Alabama Power and Regions, are all sponsors of Children’s of Alabama’s upcoming culinary fundraiser, Children’s Table, where you can mingle with Birmingham’s own celebrity chefs like Galley & Garden‘s Executive Chef James Boyce. That’s why we chose his elegant eatery as the dreamy backdrop for our photo shoot.
Mark your calendar, and don’t worry about what to wear, because we’ve got the style suggestions you need. From casual, yet chic attire to elegant evening wear, here is this month’s What to Wear!

The Taste of Homewood is back! In its 17th year, this food-filled event showcases the best of Homewood’s eateries all in one convenient location. Sample bites and beverages from 30 Homewood restaurants while enjoying live music and raising funds for the Homewood Chamber’s scholarships for local students and economic development efforts in the community. What’s better than supporting your community while savoring delicious food?
What to Wear: Our suggested attire for this event is comfortable, yet chic. A casual look that is still well put-together is ideal, and Alabama Outdoors provided us with three looks that easily achieve this style. Pair flattering jeans with a breezy top and booties or slip-on sneakers, and there you have it — casual and polished!
The Event: Live at the Lyric: Graham Nash
- March 11, 2018
- 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Tickets start at $40.50.

This event is for all the music lovers out there, especially those who love ’60s and ’70s classic rock. Legendary artist, two-time Rock Hall of Fame inductee, Songwriter Hall of Fame inductee, GRAMMY Award winner and member of the beloved bands Crosby, Stills, & Nash and The Hollies — Graham Nash is coming to Birmingham. He will grace The Lyric stage this March 11 for an evening of hits, both old and new. We’re predicting a date night in your future!
What to Wear: For this event, we’ve paired concert attire with a ’60s flair to create three funky and fashionable looks. All of these styles come from the brand-new Homewood boutique, The Moody Rabbit. This gorgeous shop, located next to Dave’s Pizza and Zoe’s Kitchen, holds a beautifully curated collection of designer pieces hand-selected with the Birmingham business woman in mind. Have fun with this event and try out something new, like flared jeans or this stunning rose velvet trench.
The Event: Children’s Table
- March 3, 2018
- 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Tickets start at $80.
- For more information, thechildrenstable.org.
This food-centric event gives Birminghamians the opportunity to tour Time Inc.’s state-of-the-art food studios while enjoying different recipes from favorite local chefs, Chris Hastings of Hot and Hot Fish Club and Ovenbird, Ben Vaughn of Root to Tail, Mauricio Papapietro of brick & tin, Fuller Goldsmith, the 14-year-old winner of “Chopped Jr.” and more. Attendees will join the editors from Food & Wine, Cooking Light, Southern Living and Coastal Living to raise funds and awareness for the nutritional needs of the patients of Children’s of Alabama — all while exploring Birmingham’s impressive food scene, mingling with the chefs and going behind-the-scenes at Time Inc.’s food and styling studios.
What to Wear: For this event, we suggest cocktail attire. Elle in Crestline helped us create three fashion-forward looks that fit the bill. Vibrant, breezy dresses reflect the rising temperatures, while this wine-colored one-shoulder top paired with black denim and heeled booties is ultra chic and stylish.
Have a fun — and stylish — March!
