Summer weather has officially made its debut in the Magic City, and we’re looking forward to spending our days under the sun. The sticky, steamy Southern humidity can make fashion choices difficult, but luckily, the summer style gurus at Gigi’s Teen, Alabama Outdoors and The Swanky Stork helped us create four looks perfect for outdoor adventures with the whole family!
From festivals to food truck rallies, we’re celebrating all things local this month with looks from local boutiques, modeled by Birminghamians at favorite local hangout Pepper Place! Worry less and celebrate more, because we’ve got your style solutions for June’s events — MADE SOUTH Hoover, SliceFest, LOCAL at the Alys Stephens Center and the Tie One On! Funky Food Truck Festival.
The Event: MADE SOUTH Hoover
- June 2-3, 2017
- Event begins Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
- Tickets start at $10.
- For more information, visit eventbrite.com.
Founded in Nashville, MADE SOUTH brings the best of Southern makers and artisans to one place for two days of shopping, exploring and celebrating Southern style. Friday’s VIP party includes early access to over 100 vendors, food tastings presented by Eat Y’all, live music by MamaDear and more. The fun does not stop there! Saturday is filled with food, live music, drinks and, of course, shopping! The event will take place at the brand-new Finley Center at the Hoover Met, and Saturday is family friendly.
What to Wear: This two-day event is all about staying comfortable while looking fresh and polished. A brightly colored sundress keeps things casual while taking inspiration from the vibrant weather. Dress it up with some wedges or opt for some strappy sandals to keep your feet happy while shopping! Grab the kiddo a sweet sundress and finish off the looks with a bright button up and easy slacks for your guy.
The Event: SliceFest 2017 in Lakeview
- June 3, 2017
- 1 p.m. to midnight
- Tickets start at $25. Free admission for kids 12 and under.
- For more information, visit SliceFest.com.
Two of our very favorite things, pizza and music, come together for the 6th Annual SliceFest 2017! This food- and tune-filled day will take place in Lakeview and features artists including Griz, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Manic Focus and Early James, plus local bands Raquel Lilly, Bailey Ingle, Tragic City and more! Attendees will stay fueled throughout the day with eats and drinks in downtown Lakeview, including unbeatable pizza from Slice as they celebrate the restaurant’s anniversary with another killer block party. This event is ideal for those wanting to explore the food and music scene in Birmingham without breaking the bank!
What to Wear: Comfortable and breezy looks are key for this all-day festival. We suggest an easy light top with some denim shorts, and nothing screams summer quite like white! Put the little one in some striped shorts paired with a simple top to ensure no wardrobe-related meltdowns erupt, and make sure the hubby stays stylish and comfortable in a simple t-shirt and shorts. You’re sure to be the best-dressed family at the festival!
The Event: LOCAL at the Alys Stephens Center
- June 17, 2017
- Event begins at 5 p.m.
- Admission is free.
- For more information, visit alysstephens.org.
The Alys Stephens Center is celebrating all things Alabama this June at the fourth annual LOCAL event. This family-friendly outdoor event will feature all of your favorite Alabama farmers, artists and vendors for a shop-able exploration of all things Alabama. Grab some fabulous locally made items, perfect for sending to all of your out-of-town friends and family once the holidays roll around. Live performances by local musicians and delicious eats from local food trucks complete the afternoon. Start your summer off right with a celebration of Sweet Home Alabama!
What to Wear: As with the other festivals, comfort and light fabrics are crucial. A cotton maxi dress looks festive and chic, while staying comfortable and conservative. Keep the little one comfy (and cute!) with a patterned sundress and finalize the family style with a casual, yet constructed look for your man. This event is a great way to explore Alabama goods without melting under the midday sun!
- June 24, 2017
- 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
- For more information, visit facebook.com.
The Magic City is getting funky for the Tie One On! Funky Food Truck Festival. Join the fun at Trim Tab Brewing Company where food trucks — including Eugene’s Hot Chicken, Shindigs, Steel City Pops and others — will be serving up sweet and savory dishes in support of AIDS Alabama programs. Bring your four-legged friend with you, because Fetch, a food truck for dogs, will be supplying the pups with treats while the Greater Birmingham Humane Society provides adoptable dogs! Purchase a t-shirt, and create your own funky masterpiece with a tie-dye station and, of course, refreshing Trim Tab brews for the adults. What beats good food, great drinks and happy dogs on a summer day?!
What to Wear: Late June is sure to be hot, hot, hot! So we created stylish looks to keep you looking and feeling cool at this festival while bringing in the bohemian vibes to mirror the funky fun! Grab yourself a bright tank with breathability and pair it with some light linen shorts in a fun pattern. The little one will love some fun shorts and a matching tank, and your man will look laid-back and handsome in a button up and shorts.
