August in the Magic City is a trifecta of creative celebration. We’re paying tribute to the art, music and film that originate and flourish all around us by providing style suggestions for three fabulous upcoming events: Southern Makers, Art on the Rocks and the 19th Annual Sidewalk Film Festival. And what better backdrop for these fashion-forward looks than the breathtaking Birmingham Museum of Art?!
Today, Claire Hubbs, Cierra Floyd and Laura Monroe of the Birmingham Museum of Art model nine looks from local boutiques Gus Mayer, Wrapsody of Hoover and SOCA Clothing for these exciting local events. So, go forth and toast to Birmingham’s imaginative talent this August while staying stylish through it all!
The Event: Southern Makers
- August 12 & 13, 2017
- Events begin at 12 p.m. each day.
- Tickets start at $24.99.
- For more information, visit southernmakers.com.
Southern Makers is a two-day festival celebrating more than 100 of the South’s most talented makers, from nationally renowned fashion designers, screen printers, textile artists and jewelers, to brewers, winemakers, farmers, woodworkers, chefs and so much more. Sloss Furnaces will be overflowing with Southern creativity at this year’s event.
What to Wear: Summer may be coming to a close, but August in Alabama still means you’ll have to contend with the heat and humidity. So, we teamed up with SOCA Clothing in Homewood to style three easy-to-wear, comfortable and lightweight options ideal for staying cool while exploring Southern art, cuisine, design and more. Stay fresh with a floral top and denim skirt or edge up your look with a distressed rock ‘n’ roll tee. Either way, you’ll feel totally at home among the creatives in these looks!
The Event: Art on the Rocks
- August 18, 2017
- 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Tickets are $20 for members, $30 for non-members.
- For more information, visit artsbma.org.
Birmingham’s favorite art-forward summer celebration returns for the third and final time this season. Explore the beautiful Birmingham Museum of Art while enjoying the best of our city’s artists, musicians, filmmakers and more. This event is ideal for connecting to the Magic City’s creative community.
What to Wear: One of the best parts of Art on the Rocks is taking inspiration from the museum’s art to create a look that will leave you feeling vibrant and special. The style experts at Gus Mayer helped us find three bright and beautiful looks perfect for this artistic evening. Go for a boldly colored dress to stand out among the crowd, or opt for classic white jeans for an elegant ensemble. Art on the Rocks is the best event for making a statement!
The Event: Sidewalk Film Festival
- August 22-27, 2017
- Films begin at 10 a.m. each day.
- Tickets start at $30.
- For more information, visit sidewalkfest.com.
Birmingham’s own Sundance returns this August with the Sidewalk Film Festival! This week-long cinematic celebration takes place across 11 venues in Birmingham’s historic Theatre District, including the Alabama Theatre and The Lyric. Attendees can explore new films and sample independent cinema they would not see otherwise while connecting to Birmingham’s most inventive and original community. You never know what you’ll experience at Sidewalk Film Fest!
What to Wear: Comfort is key for this event, but so is expressing your creative side through fashion. We worked with Wrapsody of Hoover to create three festival-friendly looks perfect for this film-filled weekend. Jeans, cross-body bags and kimonos are all essentials for this event. Here’s how we styled them!
Have fun — and look stylish — this August!
