I heartedly admit to being a boutique shopper. I like to know my sales person and the store owner, and I like to support local. The truth is, once you find a boutique that fits your style, shape and price point, it’s an easy way to shop because the choices are not overwhelming. But, there are times that we all venture into the department stores, and if you are like me, you end up like a deer in the headlights feeling a little paralyzed by the abundance of options. There is just SO much. Department stores can be hard to navigate, as they tend to try to offer everything for everyone—contemporary, modern, savvy, juniors, plus size, accessories, shoes, dresses, lingerie, sportswear, and so on. Most have, on average, at least 20 different departments within the store. I find all these sections confusing and intimidating, so I usually just get to know one or two areas and those are the only places I shop.
We also included in our email to Audrey a list of brands that we liked. This allowed Audrey to get a feel for our style and also clued her in on which brands might best suit our different body types and needs. Knowing our preferences made it quick and easy for her to swap out sizes or styles during our visit. Whether you’re looking for 9-to-5 style or day-to-night versatility, having someone else do the leg work in a big department store is so worth it. Additionally, clients have access to higher-end designer labels not stocked in the store.
So while we at StyleBlueprint really encourage shopping at our local stores, we also know the lure of the department store is real and that many readers want to know what’s available there, as well. So if you’re going to venture in, try a personal shopping service, like the one at Saks, to make it less overwhelming. Whether you need an entire wardrobe makeover, a new suit, the perfect LBD or just a few current pieces to mix in with the basics you already own, enlisting the help of a personal shopping expert saves hours of time and takes the stress out of shopping.
And by the way, stylists and personal shoppers, like Tracy James and Megan Larussa (both of whom have been featured on SB) are also quite helpful for navigating boutique shopping, as well. They can have items already pulled for you at a variety of boutiques around town. Some boutiques, like Marella, also offer personal shopping services in their shops. Bottom line, shopping can be hard and there is help out there to make sure you are getting the most for your money with people whose livelihood depends on knowing what is available in Birmingham and who are educated in helping people of all shapes find their perfect wardrobe choices!
