March weather can be tricky when deciding what to wear, as it’s often still chilly. But we’re beyond ready to ditch the boots and heavy sweaters for more spring-y looks. So as you emerge from hibernation this coming month, we’ve selected some great local events to check out. And what’s more, for outdoor feasting, an elegant affair and a feel-good Reggae show, we’ve taken the guesswork out of wardrobe decisions by enlisting the help of The Pants Store, The Clothes Tree and Shoefly. We love each of these fabulous looks, and we know you will, too!
Event #1: The Exceptional Foundation Chili Cook-Off — Saturday, March 7
Now in its 11th year, the Exceptional Foundation Chili Cook-Off is a fun-filled day of chili sampling (more than 100!), live music and family-friendly activities. As the foundation’s largest fundraiser, all chili cook-off proceeds go toward their programs, which are aimed at enriching the lives of the mentally challenged. This event has grown so much in the past couple of years that it is now held in the Brookwood Village parking lot and has more than 100 participants vying for the top prize. A panel of local celebrity judges will determine the grand prize winner, and event patrons will vote for the People’s Choice Award winner. Tickets are available for $10 in advance through www.exceptionalfoundation.org or at The Exceptional Foundation, 1616 Oxmoor Road. The day of the event, tickets may be purchased for a $15 donation. Children 12 and younger are free.
You’ll want to be comfortable during this daytime event. We suggest a great pair of denim with a somewhat roomy top (you are going to be sampling a lot of chili, right?) and some great accessories. Here are some options we put together with our friends at The Pants Store.
Event #2: The Heart Ball — Saturday, March 7
The Birmingham Heart Ball brings the life-saving mission of fighting heart disease and stroke by the American Heart Association to a local level. This year’s live auction will have patrons vying for trips to majestic Tuscany, a luxury villa in Costa Rica, a Sonoma wine country getaway and a Scottish golf jaunt, just to name a few. Plus, local experiences available for bidding include the Need for Speed Porsche and Barber Motorsports package, a party for 30 at Carigan’s Public House and even a mystery package to be revealed at the event. Tickets are $350 for an individual or $600 per couple.
This event is formal, so long dresses and gowns are the way to go. We partnered with our friends at The Clothes Tree to provide some inspiration here.
Event #3: The Wailers at the Alys Stephens Center — Friday, March 20
You don’t have to be a Rastafarian to appreciate the reggae sounds of Bob Marley and the Wailers, whose legendary music is serious feel good stuff. The Wailers, who continue to spread love with their steel drum rhythms, have performed with music legends like Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Sting, Peter Tosh and many others. To get your groove on, tickets are $37.50 and can be purchased here.
Comfort is in order at this show, and style is just a given. So we got with our Shoefly gal pals to come up with these fab looks that fit the one love bill!
Enjoy your March, and here’s to (fingers crossed!!!) warmer weather! And for more fun events going on in March, check out our Happenings page.
