The kitchen is the center of our swirling, busy lives, the nexus of life’s daily chaos, the eye of the storm, so to speak. It’s where young minds sharpen over homework assignments, where heirloom family recipes fill the air with mouthwatering aromas, where we make life-changing decisions over bills and where we gather together to break bread and laugh with loved ones. And the heart of this busy home certainly seems to capture the zen-like calm said to exist within the eye of the storm.

With its natural light softly filtering through the windows onto gorgeous white Alabama marble, subtle bronze accents, a stately Wolf range, gorgeous oriental rugs in subtle hues and meaningful pieces of art, this family kitchen serves as a peaceful space, perfect for hosting life’s ups and downs.

Alabama white marble from Sylacauga is the crowning beauty of this kitchen. "In addition to the countertops, we choose to do full height slabs of Alabama white marble for the backsplash with the pretty detail on each side of the window that has become one of our signature styles," says Cyndy Cantley of Cantley & Company.

“The homeowners are dream clients, which we knew from working with them on their previous home kitchen,” says Cyndy Cantley, lead designer of Birmingham kitchen design firm Cantley & Company. “The kitchen was a very typical ’70s update with stark white cabinetry and brown granite countertops. Their only request was for us to do what we do best: make the kitchen beautiful and functional and stay in keeping with the home’s architecture.”

“They are a joy to work with, and having worked on two of their houses, I totally understand their taste and style,” says the home’s interior designer, Iris Thorpe of Iris&Co. “She is just naturally drawn to white, so we usually start there, and then the room unfolds. This home was very interesting, because the style was totally different from their previous home. My challenge was to make our previous purchases work in a new home. For me, it is always exciting to see how things look in a new surrounding.”

"We chose the 48-inch Wolf Range with a grill and a griddle and opted for the Stainless knob instead of their signature red knobs to keep everything very subdued and soft," says Cyndy.

"We chose to recess the sconces into marble niches for dramatic effect," says Cyndy. The sconces exude an old-world ambience that gives the kitchen a warm glow in the evenings. The homeowners collection of vintage and antique cutting boards are used for entertaining guests as well as gorgeous wall art!

"The SubZero refrigerator and freezer are beautifully integrated behind custom cabinet doors," says Cyndy. "Using brass pulls is so much prettier than refrigeration of the past." This is Cantley & Company's custom English-style inset door with Kent Moulding painted a soft, custom white.
