Today, we welcome Katherine Bramlett, a designer at Marjorie Johnston & Company and Jojo Home, who shares some of her favorite ways to welcome the new season. HINT: it’s all about the details when it comes to ushering in spring.
Out with the cold, and in with a fresh, new take on your space. Here are some of my favorite go-tos to bring renewed vitality into the home.
Freshen Up With Flowers
One of my favorite ways to add detail to a room is the addition of seasonal flowers or plants. I’ve been known to spend hours wandering through the wholesale florist looking for new and unique floral choices to add that final touch. For plants, I rely on Mark at Leaf & Petal to answer all questions and to always have the best things in town! For spring specifically, I love to fill rooms with azaleas and purple hyacinths and bring outdoors inside by gathering flowering branches from the yard (or Whole Foods!). Nothing makes a prettier statement than a bundle of forsythia, cherry blossoms, quince or crab apple branches. I also love daffodils, primrose, hydrangeas and always tulips. Lenten roses are lovely, but they do best outside. One of my favorite tips: about a week before Easter, peace lilies appear and provide wonderful fragrance for the holiday.
Place cut flowers in small vases throughout the house … the foyer chest, the living room side table and the bathroom counter. No coffee table or mantel is complete without an orchid in a fabulous planter. In the kitchen, place rosemary or another favorite herb to the side of the sink. It’s kitchen-appropriate, smells heavenly and is there when your chicken needs a little pinch. For bigger spaces, like a library table or the kitchen island, fill a large container with hydrangeas.
Color Me Happy
Many of our interior spaces lean toward neutral colors and classic lines. However, a love of whites, creams and grays shouldn’t stop you from throwing in pops of color. In fact, color is most effective and delightful when one color is chosen and used in small bursts throughout the room. When used in this way, it doesn’t distract the eye or add chaos to the room. There are many ways to add color to rooms, but my favorite is through accessories — books, organic elements (plants and fruits), small objects and pillows.
Freshening up for spring means shaking off the cold and heavy so that we can welcome the new and light! One super trick to bring spring into your home is through the use of new pillows. Put up your heavy, furry pillows and replace them with light cotton and linen options. This one little alteration is an instant game changer that will carry us through till the warmer weather finally arrives.
Introducing pops of colorful fruit is another one of my favorite ways to welcome spring. Bright lemons and green apples add concentrated areas of color in otherwise neutral rooms. Try adding fruit to your favorite glass vase or bowl.
Together, all the little details of a room become the many layers that make up your space. Throwing down small rugs, either on their own or on top of sisal/seagrass, is one of the greatest ways to add another layer to a room while simultaneously freshening it up. The addition of a small rug instantly adds interest and life, and you’ll be amazed at what this simple addition can do.
Invest in small rugs with BIG personalities. They’ll allow you the freedom of flexibility — you can move the rug around or put it up at different seasons, so have fun picking it out. I prefer small, colorful rugs that add a fun punch. But I’m also known to look for a beautiful neutral rug with light blues and purples to soften up a space. I suggest Paige Albright Orientals, which always has the most beautiful little rugs to show you!
And if all else fails, add a puppy to your space. Nothing brings the happiness of a new season like a face like this:
For the team and me at MJ&Co., design is all about the details. We love every step of designing each space, from picking out the sofa to designing a wall of windows to finding the perfect doorknob (yes, such a thing really does matter). We go crazy for it all, big and small, because each detail combines to make a space that is all yours and that you can live, laugh and love in for years to come.
