One of our favorite decorators, Melanie Pounds, recently opened the doors to her latest venture, Patina. The shop is located in Mountain Brook Village and is an exclusive Verellen boutique. Verellen conceives, designs and creates beautiful modern home furnishings with an Old World attention to detail. Melanie’s decorator style is a perfect match for this line with its emphasis on balancing modern and traditional in seamless harmony. Mashups like Belgian linen and leather are unexpected, yet appealingly compatible. Melanie says, “The line is rich in Belgian design, along with custom finishes, fabrics and custom details. We have the first collaboration of iPad and iPhone cases, bracelets, lamps, tables, beds, bedding and upholstery.”
Inside, the store is bathed in neutral tones with an edgy, urbanesque aspect. Everything on the floor is for immediate sale, but each item can also be customized in countless ways and delivered in 4 to 6 weeks, in most cases. Melanie offers full-service interior design assistance with her eponymous interior design office located in the rear of the store. Whether you need a complete overhaul or just a few key pieces, she and her staff are on hand to offer advice or help you chose the right pieces in the right color schemes to fit your unique needs.
Not in the market for new furnishings? Patina carries many accessories custom-created by Verellen just for their store. Tote bags, dog leashes and place mats are just some of the items we were swooning over on our visit.
The artwork available at Patina is from Belgian artists and locals and is reasonably priced.
We sat down with Melanie and here’s what she had to say about Patina:
What can our readers expect to find at Patina?
We want to assist everyone in making the line tailored to their needs, wants and look. Come see us and spend some time getting acclimated to the vast options within this line that you can make all you. We can customize in so many ways — dimensions, and the fill of the upholstery — hypoallergenic, etc. Tyler, the store manager, would love to schedule a time to meet and show all that we have to offer.
We also carry all genres of art. Paintings, glass, literature, etc. Give us a price point and who you are getting something special for. We will pull a special package together for you. We carry paintings from Belgian artists and local, and we have price points on custom paintings that all can afford. We can also work with you and your designer to commission something for a custom space. Our paintings contain different mediums and add to any art collection.
And what types of services do you offer?
The Patina Shop wants to welcome and assist designers and individuals in any way we can. This is a town with so many talented artists and designers. We want to celebrate that local talent and be a tool in making it easier to see, feel and make your own. Melanie Pounds Interior Design is concentrating on relationships with private clients and listening to what each family wants for their home to live, feel, function and entertain.
Are the price points affordable or is everything super-high-end?
Our hope is that everyone is able to have a piece. We look at the line as art, and we want you to be able to mix in with your existing furnishings. We provide the base frame price on every price tag so you can see what each piece costs with a starting neutral Belgian linen. The price can change from that depending on the details you add. We also offer a discount on everything everyday.
Thanks, Melanie! Patina is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays by appointment. Learn more at (205) 802-9802 or Patina@melaniepounds.com.
