Deborah Stone of Stone Hollow Farmstead and The Pantry joins us today to talk about the benefits of juicing.
Some people, like my husband and a few of my friends, are trip people. They get in the car and drive until they reach their destination. THE END. And then there are those, like me, who are journey people. Journey people get in the car, head in a direction, take a few detours off the beaten path, stop and check out the local interest, farmers markets, antique stores and whatever else catches their eye along the way. Journey people arrive when they arrive.
The health and wellness business has been one of my life’s journeys. Seven years ago I discovered juicing, and since then, I cannot count the number of times I have lamented, “if only we had known about juicing when we owned the spa,” my business before I began Stone Hollow Farmstead. We do now, though, and I’m happy to share what I know about this nutritional path today.
There are a plethora of reasons that might inspire you to begin juicing. Some of the more obvious reasons are weight loss, troubled skin, digestive concerns and a need for increased energy. Often times it is an unfavorable health diagnosis that gets us thinking about what we are or are not putting in our bodies. No matter the reason, it’s never too late to get started.
Juicing is life giving and powerful, and there are many theories regarding the approach to juicing. In time you will find the program that best suits your lifestyle. Until then, start with simple, traditional Green Lemonade (recipe included at the end) and enjoy the journey. It will begin to change your life!
It’s important to be realistic in setting goals. Reversing 10–20 years of accumulation is going to take more than a minute! The Pantry juice bar assists our clients in achieving their goals. Many people think they need to begin with a 3-day cleanse. It is our experience that those new to juicing find it difficult to finish a 3-day program and often become discouraged.
Instead, we suggest clients that who are new to juicing and are still a bit unsure begin by integrating a 16 oz glass of fresh juice into their diet daily. We also encourage increasing the amount of uncooked veggies, fresh fruits, raw nuts and coconut water. The body’s storage of fuel will rise and cleansing will begin at a manageable pace. After 3 – 4 weeks of a daily dose of fresh juice, you will be ready to try your hand at a full day.
If you are strong-willed, you can begin with a full day of juicing. Do this once a week or twice a month, while also increasing your daily intake of raw foods. Energy will be abundant. You will know when you are ready for a 3-day cleanse.
The nutritional value of the foods we are eating is a hot topic today. Some believe it has diminished over the last 25-50 years. Others believe it has to do with developed crops versus wild crops. Either way, most of us are operating with some sort of nutritional deficit. Juicing provides a way to condense large amounts of fruits and vegetables, by removing the pulp and fiber, rendering a nutritious, fresh juice chocked full of life. A healthy dose of rocket fuel, pure nutrition.
When you increase the volume of food you are consuming, in this case juice, you are also increasing your intake of all things found in the produce. We don’t want to increase our toxin intake. Residual pesticides and fertilizers may be found in non-organic produce. It is best to purchase organic produce for juicing. I understand the term organic is controversial, however, in this instance it’s the wisest option, unless you have access to local, sustainably grown produce. Due to season availability, if you strive for 100% organic you will achieve 80-90% organic most of the time.
Juicing is not a source of protein or fiber, so factor this into your plan before juicing for extended periods of time.
Freshly juiced vegetables and fruits are loaded with benefits! They are a fabulous source of digestive enzymes. These enzymes encourage and support a healthy digestive tract, and most of the juices convert into an alkaline ph for the body (alkaline is good).
Juicing is a great way to increase your raw food intake, nutritional levels and reset your body’s cleansing system and is a lifestyle choice I would love to see everyone embrace!
Organic Green Lemonade
Process the following ingredients through a juicer.
2-3 stalks organic kale any type (stalks and all)
½-1 organic cucumber (skin on)
1 organic whole lemon (peel and all)
