When it comes to libations, I’m a creature of habit, often falling back on wine because I know what I’m getting. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to change things up and experience something new. This month, we went in search of fresh, seasonal cocktail offerings, and we found that Birmingham’s selections are both creative and diverse. Here are our top five picks that should be on your must-try list this season.
COCKTAIL #1: Ollie Irene’s “Are You Tiki What I’m Tiki?” Cocktail
Ollie Irene is known for its outside-of-the-box food fare, and the bar offerings are no different. This concoction, which is a mix of spiced rum, applejack, fresh pineapple and lime juices, house-made grenadine and angostura bitters, is garnished with fresh mint. It’s a seasonal choice that offers smooth sipping right out of summer and straight into fall!
COCKTAIL #2: Daniel George’s Scarlett Cosmo
We love the folks at Daniel George, and bartender Bob never disappoints. The Scarlett Cosmo, made with two parts vodka, one part razzmatazz and two parts pomegranate juice, makes for a beautiful seasonal cocktail to serve and to sip.
COCKTAIL #3: PT’s The Green Dragon
If you like a little heat to rev things up, then The Green Dragon at PT’s is for you. Jalapeño peppers are muddled and mixed with vanilla vodka, Midori (a melon liquor), a dash or two of pepper sauce and topped off with Sprite and a jalapeño pepper cherry garnish.
COCKTAIL #4: FLIP Burger Boutique’s Caramel Apple Sangria
If you could bottle the taste of fall, this would be it! FLIP Burger Boutique‘s creativity extends far beyond their burger menu with innovative specialty drinks like this one. Made with white wine, salted caramel vodka, fresh apple juice and cut up apples, plus a dose of molecular mixology for added effect, this is the proper way to bob for apples this season.
COCKTAIL #5: Babalu’s Mixed Berry Sidecar
Recently opened in Lakeview, Babalu is the new place to see and be seen. We love all the shareable small-plate options, but when it comes to the Mixed Berry Sidecar, made with house-infused strawberry, blueberry and raspberry Jim Beam, fresh-squeezed sweet and sour, agave nectar and triple sec, there will be no sharing!
