El Barrio continues to be a favorite of mine so I thought I’d share this recap of a fun girls night out there which ran last September…

Last night my gal pals and I headed downtown for a much needed GNO to El Barrio on 2nd Avenue North. Inside this relatively new, upscale Mexican restaurant we found a lively bar and an hour long wait for a table. No problemo. It’s a rare occasion when we can all get together on the same night (between the five of us, we have 18 children!), and we planned to savor every minute of our night on the town. We headed to the bar and were greeted straight away with friendly and fast service.

Margaritas are a must for any Mexican GNO! Try the grapefruit or watermelon – we thought they were muy bueno!

Urban decor and warm wood give the place a rustic, chic vibe. And the funky mural with a Mexican ghetto graffiti theme spanning the entire back wall was a great backdrop.

In this hood, the patrons range from loft dwellers, progressives, young professionals, downtown lawyer types, and date nighters, as well as our group of uber-chic suburban moms. (Yes, we did roll up in a minivan, thank you very much.)

Why not dig into a crowd-pleasing veggie quesadilla, packed with spinach, mushrooms, charred corn, goat cheese and roasted tomato garlic salsa. Served along side is a salad of fresh greens, radish, jicama, cotija and lime - COOL FRIJOLES!

The Verano was super yummy with avocado, charred corn, jicama, pico de gallo, pepitas and house-made sour cream.

For you carnivores, there are plenty of hearty dishes on the menu, such as grilled pork steaks and chorizo meatloaf. What’s more, El Barrio promises all-natural, humanely-raised beef, pork, poultry and seafood and is committed to using locally-sourced ingredients.  Now that’s my kind of neighborhood place.

We’re with you on this one, amigo. El Barrio gets our two thumbs up!

All in all, I’d say this is a must-go place to meet up with friends or for date night with your hubby.

I’ll definitely be back soon for the great ambiance, cocktails, food and service. Muchos gracias, El Barrio, and welcome to the neighborhood!
