This is the season we all want to look festive and fabulous, but with a to-do list a mile long and a calendar full of holiday events, who has time to spend hours getting gussied up? To simplify, we enlisted the help of Norma Sampley at the Bobbi Brown cosmetic counter at Gus Mayer, who uncovered the secrets to a seamless day-to-night makeup transition. Here, she takes yours truly through a daytime look and, with a few simple swaps, transitions it to be more evening-appropriate. Take a look:
For the daytime
Norma started with a hydrating face cream that contains a built-in primer, and then she used a corrector and concealer to diminish under-eye circles and fine lines. She then applied a long-wear compact foundation with a soft, round foundation brush and added a pale pink blush.
For my eyes, she used several of the matte shades in the Warm Glow eye palette, a limited holiday edition. She filled in my brows with the same shadow she used on my lids. My lips are a combination of Rose Petal lip color, Cocoa liner and Bellini gloss.
For the evening
My eyes were enhanced with additional shadow and liner, and bronzer and shimmer brick were added for a subtle glow.
Additionally, the daytime lip gloss was replaced with scarlet gloss for a more glam look.
A few subtle changes make a huge difference in producing a seamless, yet effective, move from day to evening, which ensures that no matter how you spend your days and nights this holiday season, you’ll look good at all times!
While I loved all of the products Norma used, here are my favorites:
Bobbi Brown full-coverage face brush, $42
I own several foundation brushes, but this is, by far, the best one I have ever used. It works with both liquid and powder foundations, which is an added bonus. Makeup goes on smoothly for full coverage without any streaks for a flawless, airbrushed look. There is no need to go over it with your fingers to even it out, and the coverage lasts longer, since the foundation sits on top of your skin rather than being quickly absorbed, as is often the case when using your fingers.
Limited Edition Holiday Warm Glow eye palette, $75
It is rare that I love every color in an eye shadow combo, but this one works, because it combines soft, matte neutrals with rich metallics and deeper browns that flatter just about anyone. And the brown crocodile case is a stylish bonus! With nine shadows, it’s easy to create a simple daytime look or glam it up a notch for evening.
Black Scotch long wear gel eyeliner, $24
Part of the Scotch on the Rocks collection, the gel liner in Black Scotch comes in a pot and is a unique black/brown shade with coppery flecks. Gel liner may seem a little daunting to put on at first, but it’s really pretty easy when using the right brush. (Bobbi Brown sells an ultrafine eyeliner brush that works perfectly.)
Creamy lip color, $26
The creamy lip color goes on like a moisturizing balm and leaves lips feeling smooth and hydrated with a nice sheen. The Rose Petal shade is a great neutral lip color that has lasting power.
High shimmer lip gloss, $25
I am a total lip gloss junkie and usually have at least five different shades in my bag on any given day. The high shimmer gloss in Bellini is my current obsession. It is not too pale and not too shimmery, but rather the perfect nude pink with just the right amount of pearly gleam. It looks great worn over lip liner or atop many different shades of lipstick. I now own two — one for the bathroom and one for the bag!
