Birmingham’s best music discovery festival will feature over 50 bands performing on up to eleven different stages in the Downtown Loft District. August 2, 2014: 10th Anniversary of The Birmingham Chicks Rockfest
The Birmingham Chicks Rockfest mission is to help women become dynamic, successful, service oriented and influential community leaders by using music to make a difference. This years Rockfest will be held at Workplay and features Grammy Award Winning Artist Shelby Lynne as the headliner. This year Chicks Rockfest will donate all proceeds from the Silent Auction, taking place from 7 – 9:30 p.m., and a portion of ticket sales to AMBUCS Birmingham, a Christian non-profit organization that reaches out to children and others with disabilities, to create mobility and independence through AmTryke therapeutic tricycles and wheelchair ramps. August 2, 2014: A Night of Big Stars
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham’s Third Annual “A Night of Big Stars” will be held at the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. This event is a fundraiser for BBBS to help ensure the organization can continue to provide mentors to children in the Greater Birmingham area. The evening will consist of a cocktail hour, a live, on-stage production, and a seated dinner. BBBS has partnered with ArtPlay, the arts education and outreach program of UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, to co-direct an onstage production showcasing BBBS’s best talent. August 7, 2014: “Can You Repeat That?” A game show of the Birmingham History Center
Watch Birmingham history entertainingly repeat itself in a 90-minute live game show on stage at the Virginia Samford Theatre. “Can You Repeat That?” the Birmingham History Center Quiz show, will challenge four teams of Birmingham’s most knowledgeable pundits on the facts and folklore of the Magic City. Contestants include John Archibald, Kyle Whitmire, Richard Arrington, Chris Davis, Laura Kate Whitney, Courtney Haden, James Spann, BSC’s Randy Law, UAB’s Pamela King, Frank Stitt, Glenny Brock as well as other special guests. The much anticipated Sidewalk Film Festival 2014 will take place in the Theatre District of Downtown Birmingham. The Alabama Moving Image Association was created to inspire, encourage and support films and filmmaking in Alabama. With eight venues located within Birmingham’s historic Theatre District (featuring the newly restored Alabama Theatre, a 2,200 seat movie palace built by Paramount in 1927), spontaneity rules the schedule of Sidewalk attendees. Low-priced weekend passes provide easy access to Sidewalk venues, encouraging attendees to seek out new films and sample programming they may not otherwise see. August 23 – 24, 2014: Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival
The Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival is a two-day FREE event on the streets of Birmingham’s Downtown Historic Fourth Avenue Business District, giving the community a “taste” of the rich cultural heritage of the area featuring local, regional and nationally renowned jazz artists. This years musical artists are Kim Waters, Ben Tankard, Gabbie McGee, Sean Michael Ray, Unknown Lyric, Choko Aiken, Gabriel Tajeu, Foxxy Fatts & Company, Sherry Reeves, and On Purpose featuring Dwight Houston. The featured visual artist is Michael Atkins. This festival is a free community event providing first class entertainment, a diverse selection of food vendors, a children’s village and an art exhibit for all to enjoy.
