I was first introduced to Birmingham Breadworks through the CSA program offered by Stone Hollow Farmstead, which provides a weekly share of goodies from several of the area’s best farms and local vendors. My family literally fought over the last piece of the loaf we received that week, so when I learned that Birmingham Breadworks had a storefront on Seventh Avenue South, I had to check it out. I was surprised to learn that this place has much more than bread. I went in for coffee and a loaf of bread and ended up hopping on the WiFi and proceeded to “work” my way through lunch!
The breads they make from scratch daily have simple, quality ingredients, many of which are only flour, water and salt. The pastries are also formed with the same commitment to all-natural ingredients, such as sugar, butter and whole fruits.
Owners Corey Hinkel and Brooks Taylor have been bringing their artisanal breads to Pepper Place Market on Saturdays, building a loyal customer base, which led to the opening of the storefront in a former antiques space last December.
In addition to coffee, breads and pastries, lunch options are available as well, and include daily offerings of at least one soup, a couple of sandwich options, salads and pizza by the slice. Birmingham Breadworks posts the day’s offerings on its Facebook page. Typically, there are meat and meatless offerings for both of the sandwiches, as well as the pizza.
French baguettes, croissants, ham and cheese croissants, chocolate croissants, almond croissants, cream cheese Danish and the famous cinnamon rolls are daily features on the menu. Sourdough, farm rye, raisin-Craisin walnut, multigrain and brioche breads are regular staples, but aren’t always available at the beginning of the week. They also take special orders for breads, pastries, and even giant cookies and cakes, too.
In addition to the storefront, Birmingham Breadworks sells its stellar products during the season at Pepper Place Saturday Market. Additionally, you can enjoy them at some of your favorite local eateries, such as MELT, Galley & Garden, Paramount and Bistro 218.
Birmingham Breadworks is located at 2408 Seventh Ave. S. in Birmingham. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
