Everyone loves pizza, right? With so many variations of this crowd pleaser, we are highlighting eight of our favorites. Each restaurant featured offers their own twist (or toss) on the original pizza experience, so feast your eyes on these pies and make plans to indulge this spring:

Basil Gourmet Pizza & Bar

Basil opened in the fall of 2013 in Crestline Park. Basil offers a relaxed atmosphere with a nice patio and plenty of flat screen TVs for entertainment. The specialty pizzas are unique and flavorful. Try the Buffalo Chicken with blue cheese crumbles, the Pulled Pork topped with fried onions and a bbq sauce drizzle or the Thai, which comes with a curry/peanut sauce topped with fresh cilantro, carrots, red onions and grilled chicken. If you’re feeling less adventurous, the Margherita is a great option. Check them out for lunch and dinner and note that patio dining and free wifi are both available. www.facebook.com/basilgourmet

Bettola

Chef/Owner James Lewis is well known for his culinary expertise at this Lakeview hotspot so it’s no surprise that the pizza here is out of this world! With unique creations such as the Lamb Sausage Pizza featuring squash, romesco sauce, goat cheese, Pecorino, parsley, mint and pickled red onion, this is gourmet pizza at its best. Bettola uses locally sourced ingredients and the menu evolves with the seasons. Bettola is open for lunch and dinner with free wifi and patio dining available. www.facebook.com/Bettola

Davenport’s

Jim Davenport’s Pizza Palace has been serving pizza in Mountain Brook Village for almost 50 years. The secret is in the sauce, a well-guarded family recipe that even the employees don’t know. Not only is the thin-crusted, square cut pizza delicious, but the restaurant has a quaint old school Italian charm with classic arcade games to keep the little ones busy. I’m partial to the Canadian bacon pie — it’s real Canadian bacon, which is hard to find on many pizza menus and it reminds me of all the team parties I attended at Davenport’s growing up. Open for lunch and dinner.  www.davenportspizza.com

DeVinci’s

DeVinci’s is not for the feint of heart. This is serious eats. The “Master” pizzas are thick and loaded with cheese. The Mona Lisa is truly a work of art with pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham, onions, black olives, green peppers, mushrooms and double cheese. The Santa Fe comes with chicken, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, red and yellow peppers, pesto sauce and double cheese. There’s a reason they have been a Homewood fixture since 1965. Check out the pizza at breakfast, lunch or dinner with free wifi and patio dining available. devincispizza.wordpress.com

Mafiaoza’s

This neighborhood gem located in Crestline Village, serves up tasty pies from the traditional pepperoni, The Associate, to the more inventive, The Thompson, with eggs, sausage, peppers, and fries. They offer a gluten-free crust for gluten intolerant patrons. The gangster-themed pies bring in the crowds, but no worries as these guys know how to handle the mob. Mafiaoza’s is open for lunch and dinner with free wifi and patio dining available.  www.mafiaozas.com

Mellow Mushroom

Situated in the heart of 5 Points, Mellow Mushroom is a great spot for a mellow evening free of stress and pretension — just great pizza. Go beyond the basics with The Magical Mystery Tour loaded with button and Portobello mushrooms, feta and mozzarella cheeses, spinach and jalapeños on a pesto basted crust or try the Kosmic Karma with a red sauce base and feta and mozzarella cheeses, spinach, sundried and Roma tomatoes finished with a pesto swirl. They also offer a gluten-free option. Mellow Mushroom is open for lunch and dinner with free wifi and patio dining available.  mellowmushroom.com

Trattoria Centrale

Chef/Owners Brian Somershield and Geoff Lockert (the childhood friends duo who brought us el barrio and Paramount) serve up delicious pizza to hungry diners in a cafeteria style line. This is not a place to linger around for a leisurely meal as the service is fast and the tables are quite close together, but the quality of the food is top notch. The toppings change daily, and the fresh (and often locally sourced) ingredients make every slice a special treat. One bite of this Roman-style pizza and you, too, will be hooked! Try this pizza for breakfast and lunch only and enjoy free wifi with patio dining available. www.trattoriacentrale.com
