We can safely say spring is here, which means retiring our coats and boots and breaking out pretty dresses, bold colors and lighter fabrics. We couldn’t be happier to switch out our sweaters for seersucker, as this season offers a bounty of daytime social events with very specific dress codes … preppy and proper! We teamed up with Atlanta-based outfitter Southern Proper to advise us on how to coach our guys into appropriate attire. And we love the conservative, but feminine, cuts of J.McLaughlin‘s new collection for ourselves. As it turns out, with SoPro, they make an especially handsome pairing.

Mark your calendars for these three decidedly Southern events—The Masters, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival and Atlanta Steeplechase—and embrace your preppy side for each:

EVENT: The Masters — April 6 – 12

The world-renowned golf tournament is one of Atlanta’s most coveted tickets every year, and this spring is no different. Proper adherence to the dress code of Augusta National is an important consideration, but so is the early-season heat. Making sure your beau or bro is properly attired was a job for the team at Southern Proper, Masters vets who pitched in their two cents with comfortable, smart sportswear. And did we mention you need to wear comfortable shoes? While the evening parties might call for your pretty heels, you’ll be hoofing it heavy on the course, so make sure you wear a good, broken-in pair. Fore!

EVENT: Atlanta Dogwood Festival — April 10 – 12

Can you believe the Dogwood Festival is nearly 80 years old? The bloom is an unmistakable sign that spring has arrived. There’s nothing the folks of our fair city love more than a Saturday spent drinking, eating and shopping their way through neighborhood festivals, and this is the first of the season. It’s also an excellent excuse to bust out your favorite frocks, since long and (hopefully) sunny days on foot at Piedmont Park call for comfort as much as style. The weekend-long affair boasts a ton of fun satellite events, including a 5K to run off that funnel cake.

EVENT: Atlanta Steeplechase — Saturday, April 18

Gussy up in your most colorful for this notoriously preppy event, and don’t forget your hat! Whether you’re tailgating with a cooler or living in high cotton in the Chairman’s Tent, the first rule of Steeplechase is to dress to the nines, whether you see a horse or not. The must-see spectacle is, of course, the hat contest, but the Steeplechase also hosts a run of related activities to suit nearly every age, taste and budget. This year’s beneficiary is Bert’s Big Adventure, a nonprofit that provides magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journeys to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. Equinery, finery, cocktails and cause? Don’t miss it.
