If you’ve walked outside in the last month you know – it’s here. The time of year we wish for in January and curse in June. Luckily for you, there are plenty of things to enjoy all summer long in Atlanta, both inside AND outside. But when it’s hot and you’ve got to step out of the air conditioning, the last thing you want to worry about is what to wear. Luckily for you? We’ve got it covered. Here are three excellent events with suggestions for what to wear to each. First up, we’ve got Jazz on the Lawn at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center; next is The Rise of Sneaker Culture at the High Museum of Art; and finally, chill out at the Atlanta Ice Cream Festival in Piedmont Park.
- July 8, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.
- Choose from general admission or VIP tickets
- Enjoy esteemed trumpeter Joey Sommerville.
What’s better than a summer picnic? A summer picnic while taking in the sounds of trumpeter Joey Sommerville! Pack up your best charcuterie and get your tickets to Jazz on the Lawn at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center to take in Sommerville’s unique new millennium style whose early influences from his teen days in the Baptist church shine through. Did we mention he also recorded and performed with Phish and was a featured soloist in Cirque du Soleil’s Grammy-nominated and Juno Award-winning album, Alegria? Grab your general admission or VIP tickets today, or grab some friends and spring for a table!
What To Wear: For a look that hits all the right notes, we went to Bleu Hanger in Decatur. Located right next door to Agnes Scott College, this boutique has no shortage of options for any event, including custom-made pieces by local designers. There’s also a great selection of jewelry and accessories to top off any look.
The Event: The Rise of Sneaker Culture
- Now through August 14, 2016 at the High Museum of Art
- Features 155 pairs of rad sneakers
- Buy tickets online and skip the wait!
Your Chuck Taylors have a story to tell. The Rise of Sneaker Culture exhibition at the High Museum of Art opened June 11 and offers up the history behind your FlyKnits and Converse All-Stars. With 150 pairs of shoes borrowed from the archives of some of footwear’s biggest names — plus pieces from private collections from Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and high-fashion pieces from Prada — this is one exhibition you don’t want to miss.
What To Wear: Isn’t it obvious? This is one event where you can be sure everyone will be looking at your feet. For this reason, we headed to A Ma Maniére in West Midtown. With names like Maison Margiela and Hender Scheme lining their walls, you can expect more than just your average selection. SB TIP: Outside of having hard-to-find men’s shoes, their ladies’ shoe section is on point.
The Event: Atlanta Ice Cream Festival
- July 23, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Piedmont Park
- Free entry
- Wellness activities including yoga
I scream, you scream, we all scream for … Atlanta Ice Cream Festival! Grab a friend and head to Piedmont Park to literally get the scoop on the coolest (and sweetest) festival in town. There’s no better complement to a hot day in the park than a bowl of ice cream from your favorite vendors. In its sixth year, Atlanta Ice Cream Festival is more than just sweet – there’s something for everyone, including those interested in fitness, food (beyond ice cream) and kiddie fun. The best part? It’s free to enter!
What To Wear: For this outside fest in the park, we checked out Boogaloos. Their new location at Ponce City Market is beautiful and packed full of fabulous finds. Can’t make it to PCM? They also have locations in Decatur and Brookhaven to get you outfitted for whatever you need. Carrying some of contemporary fashion’s top brands, Boogaloos should be your go-to.
Hope you are looking good and, most importantly, feeling good at these and other great upcoming events happening in Atlanta. Remember, stay calm and keep shopping!
