A warm feeling takes hold when you realize something you love is made somewhere you love. That’s Little Barn Apothecary + Co. (LBA) for me — a national holistic, organic skincare company made right here in Atlanta. And though this Southern brand has gained a huge following all over the country (especially in the West and Pacific Northwest) due to their natural, effective products, they’re also beloved because of their attention to wholesome, simple ingredients. But here’s where it gets really good … Little Barn Apothecary just opened their first and only brick-and-mortar store right here in Midtown.
Stepping into LBA’s Westside Provisions store is like an organic, cruelty-free Disney World for skin. And though you can’t find one of those delicious Mickey bars inside the shop, you can pretty much find everything else good for your body, inside and out (and by the way, the store does carry Mast Brothers chocolate bars if you really do need a sweet fix).
I walked into LBA’s new flagship spot (right across from Dtox) and the first thing I did was smile. It’s the perfect space for a small-batch apothecary that “invites you to slow down and create a truly simple ritual of self-care” as their messaging says. Besides the shelves of amazing products like Honeysuckle + Grapefruit Body Oil (smells like morning to me) and Coffee + Mint Body Scrub (or maybe this one really screams “morning”), you’re greeted with an inviting space full of lush plants, natural light, clean lines and whimsical art.
Here’s the best part (besides the chocolate): Because they call Atlanta home, you can talk with the brand’s founders, Joshua Morgan and Brad Scoggins, when you stop by because at least one of them is usually right there in the store working. The two men joined forces in 2012, while Joshua worked in the beauty industry for nearly 20 years and Brad worked in marketing, hospitality and brand management while passionately pursuing the healing power of nature. After a few years of steadfast research into botanicals and perfecting product recipes, LBA + Co. was born. What an unbelievable gift to be able to talk with the people developing and concocting products first hand — you don’t get employees better trained than that.
“We offer simple formulas that are highly effective,” says Joshua. “All of our products have five to eight ingredients. It’s a safe haven for natural, organic, sustainable, eco-friendly items.”
Actually, THIS may be the best part: LBA’s price points are attainable for the everyday person looking to better their bodies with wholesome ingredients without breaking the bank. That’s what adds to the charm and popularity of this brand and store — it’s accessible for current and would-be customers.
Besides LBA’s own products, like the ever popular Lavender + Frankincense Face Oil that was one of the brand’s first, developed out of Joshua’s search for a solution to his own plaque psoriasis, the Westside store also carries other product lines with a similar mission and ideals.
“We’ve curated a space with 35 other brands that are natural, sustainable, many of which are vegan and paraben-free,” says Joshua. For example, they carry Los Angeles-based Fiele Fragrances, which creates scents from wildcrafted, raw ingredients; handcrafted lipstick company Kosas that already has a cult following; and Georgia’s only retailer of Rituel de Fille, a cosmetics line offering natural, paraben-free, cruelty-free products. Though you can order most of LBA+ Co.’s own line on their website, these partner brands are only offered at the actual storefront on the Westside.
OK, so THIS is the best part: By visiting Little Barn Apothecary + Co.’s flagship store, there’s no guessing about which products are good for your body or the environment and which aren’t. Everything is good, comes from the earth and has a purpose. You don’t have to painstakingly examine the ingredient lists for words you’ve never heard of, because here’s the kicker: they don’t exist at LBA. And an expert consultation doesn’t get much better than asking the person who actually created the serum and perfected the entire line. Perusing the products with Joshua and Brad, eager to explain and help customers’ individual needs, is a special moment you can’t recreate at other beauty brands.
